1971 911e Targa prices...?
I am a first time 911E buyer [soon] and I have found the car i want.
the good news: It is a 1971 911e Targa in Signal Yellow. 2 owner, with only 34k original miles. the paint, interior, all mechanicals are original and immaculate. The car is very clean and feels like a new car. It drives really smooth and true [with hands off on the freeway], and accelerates nicely. the bad news: It needs heat exchangers, a new muffler, shocks, plus there is no paperwork for this car from 1971 to 1982. It has a replaced rear corner panel which is not documented with reciepts either. The dealer wants US$22,000. Is this a reasonable market price, providing it is rust free, straight, good runner, etc...? I am having this car checked out by a porsche mechanic tomorrow, and i hope to get the price down...so any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris |

Great choice on a 911. But first, I'd be concerned with the 34,000 miles claimed since there is 11 years of missing documentation. Second, $22k for an E should get you an absolutely 'needs nothing' car.
Also, what is a "replaced rear corner panel"? Are you talking about the rear fender? -- Curt |

Sounds like a $15K car give or take a few (depending on condition and if it is as advertised).
I'd be careful with a dealer car...make sure that you get a good pre purchase inspection by an independent shop. If the dealer won't let you do that, run screaming. |

Chris, Chris, Chris,
So first the good news,: The repairs you are talking about should be a factor in the selling price.. Heat Exchangers, Muffler in SS, about $2700; shocks, about $1000 or more installed. Now for the bad news The asking price is WAY high; this car in good condition is worth between $10K and $13.5K without the problems above.. It is worth more because it is immaculate...not sure how you value that, but it's not a LOT of money. The low mileage seems undocumented, so not worth a lot, and it's been hit in the rear, right? there are higher mileage cars with NO damage and good records that you may like better. Also, low mileage is only worth $$ if you DON"T DRIVE THE CAR!!! So don't pay too much for that. I would be suspicious of this car frankly, and would get an independent PPI before settling on a price that starts in the $12 to 13K range, minus problems, right?

Way too much for that car. I bought a '70 E Targa 3 months ago that was restored with great documentation for several grand less than your asking price. I had also looked at a terrific '71 E that was even in better shape for an asking price of $17K, and I think I could have gotten it for $15K. . . I just could not stand the color!
Make sure you have a PPI done, then you will know the real cost of the car versus its initial price.

Old Porsche odometers only go to 100k. Check the brake rotors, are they worn, with ridges? Old 911s are very easy on rotors, especially the rears. A car with only 34K miles will show very little wear on the rotors. Lots of wear, well you might be looking at 134K. Also the odometer are easily to break (resetting odometer when moving) so your speedo might have been fixed in the pass. Way too much money IMHO.
