Rear- Ended!

The good -

Had a real productive day yesterday. Got lots done, sun is out, feeling pretty good. Think I'll go home a bit early. After all, I'm due for an oil change.

The bad-

I live outside the little town of Gig Harbor, which is across the Narrows bridge from Tacoma. The bridge is a daily point of congestion, and as I'm slowing for traffic ahead, the motor home behind is not. Its one of those built from a Ford van cab and chassis. I creep forward as far as I can to give the guy some space. By now he is on the brakes hard, and I think we're going to be okay, but I stand on the brakes harder to try to prevent being pushed into the car ahead.

BANG!

The good-

Since I needed it earlier in the day, I was driving my old Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4. And I still had the ball in the receiver from towing a trailer over the weekend. My trailer hitch put a hole through the motor home's license plate and dented his bumper pretty good, but didn't damage the Chevy at all. Let's hear it for 5000 lb. trucks! Nice to get home and see the P-car intact in the garage.

Y'all be careful out there!

It's not nice to fool us like that! Now I've got a semi-permanent crick (I hope!) in my neck from scrunching it all up on your "BANG"--and the pictures that raced thru my mind as I pictured that motorhome bumper catching you mid-lid!!

Sheeez!!!

my other car is: A Dodge pickemup...and check out these custom bumpers...simply 3" pipe, capped and bent slightly, brackets welded in, chain/tow hooks added. The rear bumper made the same, with a trailer hitch option...I remove the hitch during hunting season for more ground clearance. When I had the old beater repainted, I had the bumpers armacoated...didn't like the rust streaks in the original bumper black paint...gawd I hate rock chips! Today, driving in to the local dump, a guy exiting in a new Chev. Z-71 truck rolled down his window, and said: "I love your Truck"...crazy as it may seem to guys living in a metro area, I get more compliments about my old pickemup than I get about my 911S. And yes, that is a rifle rack in the rear window...no apologies that I'm an NRA life member.

I had an 85 Toyota 4X4 that was a magnet for being run into. In the 8 years I had it, I was rear-ended 3 times, 2 of them pretty hard. The 4" sewer pipe I had hanging on the back of it took every hit without a whimper.

"Dude, you scuffed my bumper sticker. Need a ride to a payphone so you can call a wrecker?"

Yep! So much for those who post that you just gotta DRIVE your 911. I'm sorry, but as far as I'm concerned there are much better rigs for the "daily chores" than a 911.

Paul, if I had your car, I probably would agree with you.

I really like my SC, but it really isn't all that special, as far as 911's go, and it is insured. If it gets wadded up, it is certainly replacable.

I just wish I had the time right now to rebuild the engine, so I can get it on the road again.

Tom.
