Powdercoating estimate surprised me

I asked a local guy what it would cost to Powdercoat this handful of parts in semi gloss black and he said $600. Is that a get-outta-here-with-your-piddly-handful-of-parts price, a P-tax price, or about what powdercosting costs these days?
I’m looking hard at the Krylon paint rack right now lol

They probably have to spend a few ours cleaningde-greasing/prepping the part...

Not to mention applying the coating, then baking....

And so on...

I think its a combination of "I don't want to do it" and "this is going to be a pain in the ass" and a dash of "is this Porsche guy going to want a concourse finish?"

To properly powder coat he going to need to strip it, clean it, and hang it.

I had a swingarm, subframe and exhaust hanger for a sport bike powdercoated satin black for $175.

I also just recently had a coffee table and the top for a reception desk powdercoated clear for $250.

Powder coat

It is like tuition for a college named Stroke You Dude.Bring your parts clean and you will do way better. It may be better after everything reopens but hard to account for apathy and being lazy.Ciao

I have had a good many parts powdercoated over the years. From 20,000 sf of metal panels to a single bracket for a car. Prices vary and how busy the shop effects the price. Certainly prep should be considered. Cleaning and stripping is part of that cost. Wrapping the final product in protective paper with tape is part of the cost.

When a shop is running a big project and the color they are running coincides with what you are wanting the price goes down. When they are running flat black and you need lime green the price goes up.

Personally I feel the price is high but not hey bend over high. I would think $450 is more in line with that many individual pieces.

I am also in Texas and the cost are way less than NY.

My 2 cents.

For reference I paid $125 last week in Houston for rear and both side engine tins.
He sandblasted them and they came out well.

I used black appliance epoxy enamel and various semi-gloss engine enamels with good results. Just depends on how much time you want to spend on prep.

For reference a friend of mine got a 12' high intricate tubular metal sculpture powder coated for $1100.

Oh, and Harbor Freight sells a powder coating kit.

I would pay the $600. I do a lot of powder coating it’s not as cheap and easy to do it properly.
1. all those parts need to be blasted to bare clean metal. I guarantee some are pitted
2. All parts need to be chemically treated before coating.
3. Each part bolts removed
4. Each part hooked, hung.
5. Parts shot put into oven
6. Parts removed if using epoxy powders ( fade with uv exposure) they need to be coated again with a clear for uv protection
7. Used parts can be a pain sometimes
8. Run into trouble with a single part it can cause an extra hour or so.
9. A lot of dinks out there want everything cheap and perfect, not gonna happen.

I recently paid about half that amount for half the number of parts. Price was a little higher but quality was far less then when i had them do a similar job 10 years ago.

Prep, if you can

If you can do some of the tedious work, like degreasing and blasting, it will bring the price down.
The front cross member and pan were a bit big for my cabinet, but I cleaned them up and had them PCd in fire engine red for about 125.00 after doing all the front end parts in Por-15 black, I was getting tired of black.

The HF. Cabinet was cheap, but a compressor to feed it is where the money is, (I’m still using a small Mikita construction compressor - takes a while.

I'm looking at the pricing Anglocanadian linked: $25 and up per part, looks like the OP has 20 parts, so I'd say $600 is a pretty good deal. But who knows? Sometimes powder coating pricing surprises me.

Id say it depends on the local labor rate. Los Angeles area that's a pretty typical price.

You're gonna spend a lot of time blasting all those parts clean before you Krylon. If you dont have access to a blast cabinet, you're gonna have a bad time.

My powder coater is very reasonable on pricing but slow as hell. He got tired of me bringing him small trinkets that he gave me a gallon bag of satin black and told me to go buy the eastwood kit. I always sandblast and clean and put them in zip lock bags so all he has to do is apply the powder.

I agree. Perform basic prep work yourself to minimize his labor. Most of the work of any coating operation is prepping the part(s). In addition, ask if the shop will "gang" multiple jobs together (same color of course) for a discounted price.

Try another shop with decent referrals.
