Roadtrip Timing SA to Key West ?

I have a Black 88 Coupe with working factory air garaged in San Antonio, Texas.
I want to drive (for fun) San Antonio to Key West (and maybe return) over 2 to 4 weeks.
I can either do this in either Mid February to Mid March OR Mid June to mid July.
Which is the best timing option weather wise etc etc ?

I did it once in 2nd week of March after having driven from Northeast to Daytona for Bike week. It's a great drive especially from Key Largo to Key West. One of the nicest drives possible IMO. Enjoy.

We usually have heavy thunderstorms every day June thru Sept here in central/south Florida but the rest of the year will be pretty dry, if that matters in your decision. Personally I prefer driving down to the keys in the middle of the summer. Less tourists.

I've done a very similar drive a few times. I'd go in the spring.

I'd go mid Feb. Cooler weather. If you are traveling I-10, which I think you would, you have to pass within several miles of my house. I live in Slidell, LA, just outside of New Orleans. If you need any help, ie breakdown, flats ect. I would be glad to help. You may wish to gather the names of other Pelicans, names and phone numbers, that are on you route. Shoot me a PM and i'll give you the needed information if you wish.

I did Santa Barbara, CA to N MS via San Antonio over the Memorial Day weekend this past year to pick up my new to me '86. The car and factory A/C were fine but it was all the A/C could do just to keep up. 95-100* temps. A/C wide open the whole time and it was enough to make shorts and a t-shirt comfortable. I'd vote to make the trip earlier in the spring. -J

Cool

My wife and I are going to make the trip from Oklahoma City to Key West in a week. We have done it before and either go down the west coast of Florida or if you are in a hurry just take the interstate down the middle of the state. You can take highway 27 and miss Miami if you don't like the traffic. Parking in Key West can be a problem, so make sure that where you are staying has "good" parking spots. Street parking can be worry some. If you have a chance, stop at the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola if you are into airplanes or WWII (it's free too!)
Have Fun!!

Spring time is good.

Stop at Marathon key for some key lime pie.

This was after the drive to Rennsport 2, 2004 (from Minneapolis). The Wreck may not even be there anymore.

The drive to Key West is beautiful. If you can spare a dollar (the toll bridge costs a dollar to cross), take the Card Sound Road route. It doesn't take much longer than the standard route (might be faster in traffic) and you can check out Alabama Jack's (total dive biker bar) and drive through Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge (yes, there are Crocodiles in the Keys - not alligators, Crocodiles).
If you are bringing a spouse/date (or just love dessert) check out Better Than Sex in Key West. All-dessert restaurant featuring wine served in glasses dipped in chocolate fondue. You need to make reservations at least a day in advance.
I always recommend Blue Heaven, especially for breakfast.
Have fun, I'm envious!

Mid March will put you right into Spring Break at Key West. Just an FYI. And watch your speed through Deer Key sanctuary. Mind the speed limits as posted, especially the night-time speed limits which are only 25MPH for a short stretch. A1A is not the place to test your top end

I just did Phila to Key West 2 weeks ago, straight shot down 95 takes about 21 hours, we had great weather for 1st week in Jan, 80 every day. From someone who has been there all times of year I would recomend not summer, very hot and humid, air temp at night stays the same as the surronding waters which is about 82-85, daytime sun very intense and uncomfortably hot. If it was me I wish I were there now, tomorrow 79 and sunny, really cant go wrong now until april, although someone mentioned march is big with spring breakers...this is very true but the scenery...my the scenery.
