Advice on towing with a Rental Truck?
Hello Peeps,
I bought a nice race trailer from a Pelican here. Its in Lexington Ky, and I had plannned to pick it up after a businees trip to Asheville NC and drive it back to philly ( empty) with a rental SUV. However , i inquired ( to hertz) about whether the rentals have a hitch and they said trailering is NOT ALLOWED !! Is this true? never heard of it. Anybody ever hear this? What are my options ? do these larger SUVs usually have hitch receptacles anyway and the wiring? they must. If so, i guess i could take my hitch with me and use it without them knowing. alternatively could i get a rental hitch from uhaul put on there for the ride? any comments welcome cheers Frank |

All major rental companies don't allow trailers. Hertz commercial will allow it if you are a business renter and have something like 5 million liability insurance with the business. |

Correct, Hertz will not allow towing.
But Enterprise Commercial will. Quite a few local friends will rent a 3/4 ton pickup from Enterprise Commercial to tow their trailers on long tows to keep the miles off their SUV's. It isn't cheap, but it's available to anyone, not just businesses. They have 3/4 ton Dodge Rams, Ford F250s here locally and a few of the Rams have the Cummins turbodiesel. FWIW, every Chevy Tahoe or GMC Yukon made in the past several years has a Class III receiver and a plug. I've rented one or the other almost every week when traveling for work and have yet to rent one from National Car Rental that doesn't have the receiver. But the rental agreement says you can not tow, so check with your own insurance company to get their input heaven forbid something should happen in transit.

I've rented a van at least twice to haul cars back and forth CA/CO. The big 1 ton 15 passenger jobs. Hitch, wiring and all. Had one of those Ford V10 gas engines once. Local truck rental place. Check you local listings.
