Steering rebuild questions
 

To the hive mind... a few questions...
I'm redoing the steering with turbo tie rods (elephant extended) on a 67 SWB and was looking at the rubber guibo joint at the rack. It's the last rubber piece in the steering. Does anyone replace this with a plastic or aluminum part? Second, the plastic cone that fits to cover this guibo... Does it have an adhesive on it to hold it in place? Finally... There was some kind of washer...it disintegrated into little bits...that is on the steering column by two wire to space it within the steering mounting tube. Pelican says NLA. Anyone know what this was? PET lists it as 901-347-793-00 and NLA... :-(.

guibo: our host has them "Steering Rack Coupler Disc" 901-347-201-02-OEM; I think the number has been superseded and they bolt in well. This joint will want to flex so I don't think you would want to use plastic or aluminum.

plastic cone: It sits right on top of the rack and the top end fits around the rubber housing of the bearing/bushing, no adhesive needed.

901-347-793-00: NLA; I made one out of 90 durometer rubber for my '66...worked very well. If you would like to know how I did it let me know.

Very nice! Thank you for the images and the rubber donut idea.

The guibo is actually in really great condition given its 40+ years old, i was just wondering if anyone replaced it from a 'performance' stand point.

I wonder how long these last, and if the slow hardening to be expected from a rubber piece can be test in situ somehow?
