Any tips on removing CIS airbox?

I've posted a couple of times on this 'engine won't rev' problem with no solution. Fuel pressure seems good at 45psi with engine running, good spark, fuel injectors all have good spray pattern, fuel distributor piston moves easy, etc.

I can start the engine and manually move the fuel distributor flapper and the throttle and the engine revs great. When I try to rev the engine without manually moving the flapper, it backfires badly. This leads me to believe I don't have enough vacuum to properly lift the flapper.

I can't find a vacuum leak anywhere. The two middle rubber boots from the air box to the intake runners are very balloned. I suspect they could be leaking and are the problem.

So finally to my question, any tips on removing the air box and runners with the engine still installed?

Thanks,
David

It's very tight up there where the FI is so you'll have to do a partial engine drop to remove that stuff.

I got the FI system out. I didn't have to drop to motor. I bought a 12mm universal joint socket and was able to loosen all the intake runner to head nuts. The nut on the front passenger side took about as long to remove as the other 11 nuts combined.

I didn't find any noticable tears in the air box to runner boots but they are pretty spongy. I'll go ahead and replace them.

It's frustrating when you get a look inside the intake ports. Valves and ports have heavy deposits.

I sent you a private message, but guess you didn't get it. I live in Houston and also have a 78SC. I am also having a fuel pressure problem (replacing the pump today). Send me an e-mail and perhaps we can work together and take a few drives in the Houston area. Also, I race karts!
