Passed Smog test!

Got the car smogged yesterday.

That's pretty clean. Grats. That can be a PITA.

Scott Douglas 01-23-2013 01:41 PM

Cleaner than I expected and yes, it can be a PITA for sure.
Thanks!

Scott,
Congrats!

I've been thinking of building up an EFI system for my car and I keep thinking of CA.... The idea of emissions testing is great, and the goal of cleaning the air is similarly commendable, but the visual inspection is complete crap. I think they should just measure the emissions and give you a pass/fail. It's frustrating because there is new technology that could make these old cars run better and cleaner than they did when new, but because of the visual inspection it isn't legal to change the induction system, even to something cleaner.

It's a personal pet peeve of mine when people forget the mission (clean air) and get lost in the details (visual inspections of long obsolete, primitive, emissions control devices).

Off the soapbox....

Congrats again... and wow, you really are running very clean by any standards! :)

Great numbers!

Did you do anything special to the car to get these numbers?

Scott Douglas 01-23-2013 05:36 PM

Only thing I did was take a 40 minute ride on the freeway to make sure it was good and warm. Sat at one test station for half an hour waiting with one more car ahead of me. I left and went to another test station. Got a short open stretch of road in on that drive so never got out of 3rd gear. Got the temp up to the normal range again. There was no waiting at the second station so after teaching the tech how the shifter worked we got it tested within 30 minutes of pulling in.
On the visual, well, he hooked the ignition lead up to a vacuum line, so what's that tell you? I corrected his error as I didn't want to fail the test. It's a rebuilt (1996) motor out of Jerry Woods shop. Runs great as evidenced by the numbers.

So Scott, did this pass as a '78 SC or a 993? My guess is the average Smog checker would have a 50-50 chance of opening the right end of the car.

Scott Douglas 01-23-2013 09:21 PM

Richard
It's a '78 SC that has a motor that was rebuilt back in 1996. Sorry for the confusion.

your NO is high compared to the average, why?

Scott Douglas 01-24-2013 08:05 AM

I honestly couldn't tell you why. If I recall other tests in the past, it was higher on those too.

Scott, was all the exhaust original and nothing modified?

Great numbers!
