Question Valve job

Hello,
I have acquired a 89 Carrera 60k miles without 'papers'. I have driven the car for 600 miles now without a noticeable drop in oil level. What would I be on the look out for ? Is it a ticking noise or the need to add oil every ~ 300 miles ? If in fact it was not done previously then should I go ahead with it given the age ? As I will not be doing this myself...what pointed questions would I pose to the mechanic ?
Thanks for your input...
Peter

Why do you think you need a valve job if it only has 60K miles and it's not losing any oil? You din't say what problems if any you were experiencing??

Nice meeting the two of you yesterday.
A valve adjustment and a valve job are two different animals.
A valve adjustment is a routine maintenance that requires no new parts other then new valve cover gaskets, nuts, and oil change and filter.
A valve job would require a partial (top end) engine rebuild.
Not knowing how many miles its been since the last valve adjustment it would be a good idea to have them adjusted.
Engine oil level should be kept, ideally, mid way between the full and add marks on the stick.
Check it only after it is at operating temp.,car is level, and motor is running.
Beautiful car you've got there by the way.

Then I would simply do the routine maintenance and enjoy driving it.

1. Engine and Trans Oil, Change Brake Fluid, Fuel and oil filters
2. Valve adjustment
3. Check Tires and Brakes
4. Check Ignition parts and Timing
5. Replace Brake Lines and Fuel Lines

Have fun!!

Peter - have you mechanic check the rubber brake lines as you have no paperwork on the car. If unsure of their age have them replaced with a brake fluid flush. Your engine oil change is pretty much mandatory with a valve adjustment, maybe go with a 15W50 to slow seepage past the valve guides (most likely where your "puff" is coming from). Be sure the mechanic you choose is a 911 expert, things as simple as an oil change can get botched... for instance by them not knowing that oil level is check with the car at idle fully warmed up and overfilling it.

Great advice...so the line up
1) Valve adjustment with oil change
2) Replace all rubber oil lines
3) Replace all rubber brake lines with brake flush
Guy comes recommended from other PCA members...inspection cleared all other stuff to date
Future AC replacement
Best,
Peter

Rubber fuel lines not oil lines.
