Edelbrock and Porsche??? Yep

Here's a February, 1989 - VW & Porsche magazine article outlining Vic Edelbrock's 930S ordering experience. Thought it would interest some of the 930/S fans...and people that didn't believe me when I mentioned that Vic had a Porsche.

Note: Thanks to Warren for the scanner setting advice. Next: Interesting 917 article...

That's a great story. I wonder where the car is these days?

When one of the hot rod shows was building him and his daughters a car they showed his collection of Edelbrock red automobiles. I'd guess it's there.

Absolutely true story. I saw Vic several summers ago when we we gave him a ride in our race boat. His mom has a place on a lake near here. I asked him if the story was true and he confirmed. And he still has the car last I heard.
Vic and his family have gas in their veins. They are very nice people.

I still have that issue! Interesting story about how he wanted that color combination and was finally able to get it. With regards to VW & Porsche Magazine, I wish they had maintained the format that they had back then. I was a looong time subscriber up until a few years ago. They went downhill after they changed to the "European Car" format. I just couldn't take the watered down format and their apparent inability to follow through with project cars anymore. They'd talk about a project, and if they actually started on it, they'd never finish it. Coverage was getting pretty hit or miss (mostly miss). Sad. It used to be a really good mag. I still have every issue (most of them with Post-Its marking good tech articles!)

Excellence mag started out as Porsche mag in 1987 ... before the PCNA and Porsche, A.G lawyers arrived at their doorsteps ...

^what he said...I knew Excellence wasn't always the name, and I remembered that Porsche was in the name, but I couldn't remember it exactly.

Dave,

I have many of the older issues as well. Pretty much VW & P mag was the Pelican of it's time. Unfortunately if you had a tech question it would take 4 months to have it answered IF they picked your letter. The wonders of technology.

By any chance do you have the first article on the Flatnose conversions being done here? I believe it was an article done on Sport Performance of San Jose, CA. They did a taga and may have had a coupe as well. It was most likely published in the the early eighties.

Porsche Crest

Rick,

Ever seen any of the old quarterly/special issues predecessor to European Car/VW & Porsche called VW Greats? It was started as a lark by some LA-based detroit-iron speciaty mag folks as a competitor to "test the waters" in the VW specialty mag market originated by Dune Buggies & Hot VWs!

Dune Buggies and Hot VWs is a sweet publication. I'm a loyal subscriber.

Not sure. I'd have to do some digging. My first issue is from 1981 I think, but the first few years are hit or miss as I didn't actually subscribe until around '85. I do have the issue with the IMSA style 914. WOW!

Hot VW's is and has been one of the best car mags ever. I still pick one up occasionally at the bookstore even though I haven't owned a bug for quite a while .

Warren and David: Yes, I do have a couple "VW Greats" mags....along with a couple of performance guides that they published seperately. I love going through the old stuff every few years.
