Pre muffler install?
So this weekend I plan on installing a pre muffler I bought from a pelican
I just received the metal gaskets from our host and bought the stainless bolts last night Is it recommended to use sealant on gaskets or just install without? Last edited by plumb4u2; 01-25-2013 at 08:27 AM.. |

dry on the gaskets, just make sure the mating surfaces are clean. Also, if you are using SS fasteners put som anti seize on the threads. Warren

I did mine without any sealant and have since pulled it off a couple times for other work and haven't had any leaks even reusing the gaskets.

Got a torch?
Just keep in mind that the old bolts are likely to put up a fight. You may get lucky and wind them all off but if not some are hard to get to with a grinder (Dremmel).

Soak the bolts with PB Blaster. WD40 is worthless.

^ +1. They are probably total rust-balls.

Pelican sells self-locking copper plated nuts that work great for all the exhaust fasteners.
Pelican Parts - Product Information: 18-30-7-620-549-M58 If you have some wear on your flanges you may have to double up on gaskets to get a leak free seal. When I swapped my cat for a pre-muffler I had some minor exhaust leaks until I doubled up the gaskets. -J |

Prepare to be pissed with the Dremel, too. Make sure you have the flexible extension ready. Even with that, some of the nuts/bolts are hard to get to. Did mine last summer and took me about 5x longer than I expected.
