Decoding a VIN
Does the series number at the end of a VIN refer to the sequential order of the car for the whole model year or just for that particular combination of delineators?
For example, is 9114410065 the 65th car off the line in 1974 or is it the 65th 911 Carrera Targa? Thanks, Mark

Hi Mark,
According to the Porsche 911 Red Book 1965-1999, the 1974 Carrera Targa production run for the US was 246 units, having a VIN ranging from 9114410001 to 9114410246. So, I'd conclude that the VIN you provided in your example is the 65th US Carrera Targa produced, not the 65th 911 (of any type) produced in 1974.

Thanks for the response. That makes sense.
