3.2 conversion to webers? - quickie - what's needed?
just a quickie - what's the short list of items needed to successfully convert a 3.2 to "vintage look" with webers
i'm only talking topside stuff here - distributor?, cams?, manifolds? will stock 3.2 cams work OK for this? if not what is best cam choice? will PMO tall manifolds for 2.7CIS heads work? (already have the webers & PMO manifolds) what is the distributor solution to provide timing adjustment, & to trigger an MSD? (what fits in place of the motronic dizzy? - or can it be modified to work?) (existing dizzy has no timing adjust slot) - who does the modification, or sell s the parts? exhaust issues are not relevant to my info quest - have that covered already TIA (asking cuz i got a pile of 2,7 stuff and a 3.2 that is languishing - so before i start selling off all the pieces, i'd like to consider if the alternative is worthwhile doing) . |
all the fuel injection goes, PMO carb kit is the easiest but pricy, if you have the webers, the manifolds and linkage are available from PMO. you can keep the same cams for now but more power out of bigger cams, you need cams that have 4 bearings, ignition will be like a backdate (dissy, CDI box) recurve and remove the vacuum on the dissy. thats about it. Backdate the heat and some SSI's will complete the conversion. total cost, $2-6K depending on what you find or buy new

I'm doing just this.
The 3.2 heads have a offset notch to clear the fuel injector in a different spot than other 911 engines so non 3.2 manifolds can leave you with no room for a gasket in that spot (vacuum leak) I understand a recurved 2.7 dist will work with a CDI. I got my PMO carbs used and bought the remaining parts of the carb "kit" from Richard at PMO, it was a little less than a grand. |
Do you have to change pistons if you change cams (Like you do on a CIS motor)? Valve reliefs in the pistons and all that?
The stock motronic works awfully good to just swap out for webers and not have it be perfect. |
slippery slope here, all depends what you want. Ideal is a ground up rebuild with carbs in mind as induction system. The carbs work good with the FI cams and pistons but bigger cams and pistons will make more power. but most who do this conversion are looking for the sound and quicker acceleration and the engine WOW factor. yep, agree just swap out and have fun!
