Waking the '72...but smoke
Hello again. Started the '72 after a long winter nap. Still having smoke on start-up. Also, oil is coming out of the exhaust, especially when i rev the motor. Below is my thread from last year on smoke, leak down, etc.
Big question: is it a rebuild? just a valve job? seals? Thanks for any advice. Mike Good news bad news! |

Drive the hell out of it. My "Rat" smoked after sitting for months and has gotten better (no smoke at all) since I drive it nearly every day.

Listen to Joe Bob! ^^
Smoke is an easy diagnosis. You need someone to follow you as you drive. If it smoke when on the gas it's commonly rings. If it smokes after you are off the gas for a bit coasting down from say 50MPH then it's valve guides. If it's both then you need a full top end rebuild. All of these smart assumptions are on a HOT engine, driven a bit hard-ish. How many miles since you have it back and on the road with this condition? Oil level is Mid stick, running, HOT and on a LEVEL surface??

smoke goes away after a good drive. no smoke on acceleration or deceleration. only at idle, but it goes away after a long drive.

You need an Italian tune up! Mine smoked so bad when I first started it, my neighbors almost called the fire department. The smoke gradually cleared as the rings reseated. I got it on the road and, well, flogged away. That was the end of most of the smoke. After that, I determined my valve guides were leaking as I had smoke on deceleration. From what I read here, an occasional puff of smoke on startup or idle is normal for the longhoods.

In storage, oil can seep past the rings and get into the exhaust (muffler). It can smoke for a long time without using any of the current engine oil.
Do like Joe says. Keep an eye on the oil level and only be concerned if using more than a quart per 1,000 km (600 miles)......
