Red face Weird hose 1981 porsche 911 sc

Hey Guys,

I have a 1974 porsche 911 sc with a engine swap to a 1981 3.0 L engine inside it. All done before i bought it. After working around the clock to get this car prepared for driving. My dad and I seen a loose hose wrapping around somewhere from the back. We followed the hose to a canister located behind the Oil (Fill up), and to the right of the air box. I have posted pictures to give you a better idea of it.

Please let me know, and also is it needed for the 1981 engine or is it just left over from the 1974 engine?

Thanks again,
Chris.

the canister is a charcoal canister to filter gas fumes from the tank. its not really nessesary but its not that hard to plumb it in like its suposed to be. im not sure if the 74 had it or not

You are ok. You are talking about the charcoal/carbon canister which sucks gas fumes from the driver's side inner fender expansion tank. Pretty much the same between the 74 and 81.

On the 81, there is no rear bumper side hose. You will have an open port in the canister and wonder "WTF" is this port for. It is ok if open. Perfectly factory. On the 74 - the port - and the connected hose - leads to an engine shroud port in between #1 and #2 cylinders.

The deal/theory was the air pressure from the big fan would force some air into the canister and aid in pumping the raw gas fumes into the CIS air box to be burned. The fumes would enter on the driver's side of the air box. The fat hose on the front (bumper) side carried to fumes to the airbox.

Get fresh hoses if the old are skanky and hook it up like the 74.

That end of the canister was plumbed to the shroud to allow air to be blown into the canister to dry it. On later cars it was just open.

Large line comes around the front of the engine and plugs on to a nipple on the left side of the airbox with a clamp
