"Bench testing" a Cold Start Valve

I've read a lot of posts about testing the CSV while the engine is in the car and all hooked up.

I've got my engine out, FI bits completely off. What can I do to test it without too much involvement?

Can started/ran fine, but what to give the potential buyer something concrete.

You need a 12v source and some method for delivering pressurized liquid to the valve. I have a spare CSV fuel supply line and fitting and some extra electrical connectors for bench testing various CIS items.

You have to be careful about using 12v on most injectors. They generally like 4V or a little less. I use one of these:

Fuel Injection Pulse Tester 3398

You can fab your own pretty easy just by doing some searching on the net. Just make sure to use 4V or less in general and an on/off switch so you are not using sustained power for any length of time.

Not an injector, it's a CIS cold start valve - think "solenoid-operated valve that squirts gas" instead :)

They're wired off the starter solenoid - they certainly get 12V, if it's cold enough in the first place, and either the thermo time switch or the little 12V heater built into the TTS (on the same circuit, thus also runs only when starter cranking) hasn't got it warm enough to break the ground circuit yet. The TTS heat soaks from the motor so the CSV doesn't come into play on warm/hot re-starts.

Spruggy,

I believe you are right. I'm nervous about applying 12V to standard injectors. The CSV is not engineered the same. My bad.

CSV test gadget........

Tood,

This what I use for testing CSV either in situ or off the engine.

a). Engine installed: Connect the special extension fuel line to the supply line to CSV and connect the electrical plugs and crank the engine.
b). Bench test: Need a FP to deliver pressurized fuel and a 12-volt source to energize the CSV.

It might cost you more to make these gadget just to sell a couple of CSV. But it's fun to do some testing at home.

You could send it to WitchHunter Performance and have it professionally cleaned, inspected, and tested for $22.

It takes about a week
