Fuel tank POR 15 results ??

New project 86 930 Has been in storage since 1990

After draining the fuel I noticed a level of corrosion , the tank has now been removed
Anyone have experience using the POR15 fuel tank repair system
Suitable DIY project ? And results?

Thanks in advance for the input.

I've used POR-15 fuel tank sealer on three occasions, and all three times it worked great. One of my projects has been in service for several years with 0 issues.

That said, the prep is fairly labor intensive and sealing a tank with this system takes significant time once you've cleaned, etched, dried, etc. Still, it's the only tank sealer I will use. Certain other sealants (Kreem comes to mind) don't handle today's fuels very well and will eventually come off.

Just don't rush the prep. The POR product comes with very complete instructions.

It is not reccommended for CIS tanks with the plastic swirl pot. It may not adhere to the plastic and peel off clogging the tank.

I actually used it successfully on the inside of my tank, which included a plastic swirl pot. I did so after doing some research on others who have done this as well.

They found Por15 does not adhere to the plastic and, therefore, cannot peel. This is was what I found. My swirl pot was not damaged by the cleaner either. It remains a bright and shiny orange to this day.

I did, however, make an effort to keep the chemicals out of the swirl pot during application.

Check you tank carefully. Keep in mind it is galvanized so it could be OK. When I took my tank out, I realized what I thought was corrosion was just old cruddy gas. I cleaned it out with purple power and a chain. My tank is original and from 1976.

That said, I know quite a number of people who have used POR 15 with great long term results, however, none had plastic bits in the tank like the swirl pot.

Yes, the tank is Galvanized I assume Possibly the degreaser and chain could be worth a try
Could you desire the process that was successful for you ?

Here is the play by play with pics.
1976 911S – from garage find to on the road

Have handy:
1) A Full big container of Purple power
2) Hose
3) hot water
4) Chain
5) Good high powered light
6) Retractable mirror

7) Retractable magnet (to get the chain out that will get stuck)

8) Time, it took a weekend for the purple power to do its thing and the gas tank to dry. The actual work was maybe an hour or so (once the tank was out). Keep in mind, you don't want to apply heat to dry this sucker...best to let nature do its job and dry through evaporation.

The rest of the what I did are in the link above.

I used it once and not pleased with the results. My tank had a small hole. I had the hole fixed at a local radiator shop (he soldered it). As an added measure I did the POR thing, sealing the entire inside of the tank, following all the directions for prep etc. Tank held for 6 months then started leaking.

Thought It would be fixed for good.

Oh well.

Don't use it. Clean it out the best you can, if that fails purchase a new tank and save yourself time and a headache.
