Turn signal & hazard relay confusion
 

I need to tap into the collective Pelican knowledge here. I have searched and am getting more confused on which relay I need to focus on.

Here are the particulars:

- '82 SC
- Turn signals have been intermittent since I got the car in April '12
- Previous owner had replaced the turn signal switch in the past couple years
- I assumed turn signal switch and replaced it today
- Still no blinkers
- Researched on Pelican and learned of hazards/turn signal connection
- Tested hazards and they don't work either
- Found a thread here that referenced a relay behind my fuel/oil level gauge
- Pulled that relay and gave it a few gentle taps
- Reinstall relay and everything worked... for awhile
- Now back to intermittent working
- Relay that is installed behind fuel/oil level gauge is part # 91161810200
- Pelican catalog reports that this part # is the seat belt relay
- The relay that is listed as the turn signal relay does not fit the socket in question

Do I have the wrong relay in this socket? It seems to be the source of the issue as it responded to the tapping and worked, for awhile. I'm ready to replace it but given that it is a $67 part I don't want to just buy it and hope.

Ok, update my own thread time:

I believe I found the error of my ways in relay identification. I wasn't looking diligently enough behind the fuel/oil level gauge and I noticed that behind the seat belt relay was another relay. I pulled this one. Attached is the photo:

It is in the location referred to for the turn signal relay. Problem seems to be the part # on it does not show up on a Pelican, or Google, search. Looking through other threads on this issue in an SC the part # that is offered (Hella part # 914-618-303-11-M44) shows up on Pelican as NLA.

Fishing around on the site yielded this relay (Wittrin part # 914-618-303-11-M504) as a possible solution. I'd rather buy Bosch or Hella but this seems to be all Pelican currently offers. Anyone have experience with this part/supplier? Given that it's $12.25 I will probably take a flyer on it.

BTW, I tool out the turn signal relay, gave it the same gentle tap treatment and now the turn signals stay on steady when the indicator lever is clicked all the way left or right. Hazards still do not work.

Go to Autozone buy the $16 flasher relay I believe it's type EP 36.

I tried every flasher relay i could find locally (even ordered some) non worked correctly.
Found one that worked but both signal indicators in the dash gauge would flash simultaneously.
Finally gave up and ordered the expensive one from Pelican.

Thanks, I saw that too. Should have mentioned it above. I'd be okay paying that if I'm confident it is the right one. I guess I'll just bite the bullet and order it.

Follow up: just as pete3799 said, the cheap one doesn't work. Part # 914-618-303-11-M504, brand Wittrin. It lights up the indicator in the tach once and then both arrows light up and stay lit. The actual turn signals are on steady, no blinkie. Hazards come on and stay on, no blinkie.

I'd say don't waste your $12 on this. On to the expensive Porsche one.

I carefully opened up my stock Hella brand relay, nothing seems amiss. Can't see any broken traces on the printed circuit board or cracked solder. I manipulated the actual blinker mechanism a bit and it works again intermittently.

I wish I saw this post before I ordered the $16 one. Yep, as all have stated above, it does not work. It almost acts like it can't pull enough juice to blink properly. Blinks once (barely) and then both lights stay on but not at full brightness.

Anyone know what size amp the fuse is supposed to be for this? I have a 25 amp one in there, and fiddled with lowering it to 16, and then 8, thinking maybe there was too much resistance to make this part blink properly (is that how it works?), but still no go.

Worthless part. GRRRRR :mad:

Pelican shouldn't even sell this darn thing.

Ok, so I'm ordering the expensive one today. Hope it fixes the problem. I gotta get this car to pass inspection (my temp tags are well beyond expiration because of this problem). All kinds of electrical gremlins have been keeping me from achieving this.
