How to remove pin from brake on pedal cluster?!

I have wanged on it with a punch, heated it, tried to drill it. It just won't come out. How did you get it out?

Drive it out with a pin punch. After a couple of weeks it should come out.

You have to use a punch and a LOT of Kroil.

Hi...when you stated that you 'tried to drill it' ?...Try putting it on a good drill press, secure it, and drill it out. They are as you know a hollow pin, so to get it out you will first have to drill through the hollow part with a drill bit just a size larger.

Once through, up your bit size one size larger and go again ; best not to drill it completely out unless you happen to know where you can get a larger roll pin. (They come in a variety of sizes.)

Once you have drilled it 'just about out' ...Now try hammering it out. Actually if you have a good vice you should be able to press it out.
You will need - say a 1/2"nut to begin with - between one end of the pin and the a vice jaw.... The nut just has to have a larger hole than the roll pin to pass through... For the other end, use a good grade smaller size bolt between the other jaw to 'press/push' the roll pin out.

After it moves to the max/ depth of the 'nut'/ you may be able to pound it out. If not, now use a 1/2 socket instead of the bolt... A short piece of black pipe also works well if you have any. (1/2" iron gas pipe} A plumbing supply place or the likes of Home Depot will carry it - Very inexpensive.

You know the hole is tapered right?? In your picture you are looking at the BIG end. So you have to hammer from the other side... In the 3 clusters I have done I have soaked it with penetrating oil over night then just punched it out the next day.

I drilled mine out (but not completely). When there is just a thin sheet of the pin left, you can use a small chisel or flat blade to break it free, then drive it out. It took me a long time, but it was my first pedal cluster rebuild. Take your time and be patient. I will eventually work out!

BTW- it looks like your brake pedal return stop is bent.

Excellant. I did NOT know that that the hole is tapered. That makes a BIG difference.

I was actually wondering if the brake pedal return was bent, because the angle in my unit make no damn sense.

Thanks everyone! Really appreciate it.

not tapered. use an air hammer and a bit slightly smaller than the pin.

Would this be something a machine shop could press out easily?

Pin punch, Kroil and ....... don't forget, a BFH (most important). I haven't had to use heat yet, but don't go overboard. The setup to apply max. force with hammer is important for the most bang for buck. A substantial bench vise is suggested.

Yes, a press would be good too.

Drilling the pin pin could cause the drill bit to bite and break!!!!! Lubricate and use the correct size puncher. Set the pedal on a vise and use a BFH to get the pin out.

Really? I seriously would swear it was tapered... but I defer to those with a lot more expertise

As others have said...... heat it up and punch the roll pin out. I found using a flat file on one end to level it off and enable you to see where the pin edge is, was a real help to start off. They are not tapered.

Drilling will work, but it is spring steel and therefore hard, and unless you are careful it is easy to get off line.

And to add to your 'enjoyment', getting the pin out can be the easy bit. Most often if the pin is seized, then the pedal lever will also be seized on the shaft, and getting that off can be even more 'fun'. Again heat is your friend, but you will need to fashion some way of supporting the pedal (it is not a very convenient shape unfortunately) while you try to punch out the shaft.

Good luck - heat, perseverance and a BFH are the key components!

id advize against the heat. dont get it too hot just enough to liven it up. that point on the clutch lever gets alot of stress. you dont want to risk weakening it.
