Bursch cat bypass sold by Pelican

I'm talking about this part:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/images/new_images3/catbypass-late.JPG

My question is... to install on a completely stock '85, what accessory hardware is required (replacement gaskets, nuts, bolts)? References to Pelican items are appreciated.

Thanks much. What kind of gains are seen when replacing ONLY this part of the exhaust system (OEM muffler)? I'm trying to go one step at a time.

Gaskets and new hardware required. You will most likely have to cut the old nuts off. Depending on condition of your old catalytic, you may notice a slight in response. I added a Bursch Carrera muffler also. Good muffler for the price.

Robert,

I figured I needed new gaskets & HW; I was just trying to confirm exactly what parts to order. Right now I have the following on my project list. I am trying to make sure I am ordering the right stuff - neither too much nor too little. I am ONLY replacing the cat with a bypass for now.

Catalytic Converter Gasket (muffler to catalytic
converter), 911 (1978-89)
C-111-191-01
$2.75

Catalytic Converter Gasket (Heat Exchanger crossover
pipe to converter inlet), 911 (1978-89)
H-111-193-07
$10.95

Catalytic Converter Gasket (Heat Exchanger outlet, 2
required), 911 (1978-89)
H-111-192-06
$9.95

You'll notice some difference just in these two. In general though, it's sort of all or none. I'm used to a very quick car. With the paper filter, I thought I noticed some loss. I put in the K&N cone, and I know there's a difference. It blazes once again.

I have K&N cone, chip, home-made dual out (I have bursch in shed for emissions), cat-pipe, and it's a 5 and a half second car 0 to 60. When I got it, it was 6.32 seconds. I've also lost around 150 lbs, but I think that's not as much a factor as the others.
Hard to say what these items do one at a time. My guess is, with the less restrictive exhaust I have on, and the chip, my car benefits from less restrictive non-paper intake. I know it does, because I can feel it.

You have to sort of think of these things as all acting together with each one doing just a little by itself, but with them all, the change is greater than the sum of the parts. When you get to the stage I'm at, you will be driving a totally different car from what you're driving now.

Kurt

Was it you that cut your air box to mount the K&N cone? I know someone posted a picture yesterday.

I was thinking of getting the Ram Air from Powerhaus. Is this what you are using?

Yeah, I did cut up the box, and no, that's not what I'm using. I'm just using the cone. It replaces the black box.

Cutting up the black box is key though for either. You need to support it, and the box shell supplies that support. They give you one brace with the kit, but then the cone and air flow meter are all being supported by one brace on 1 bolt in the air flow meter, and the bolt in my old one stripped after a month or so.

This butchered version I have now works great. It's on very well, doesn't bob around and is very stable and tight.

I looked up the price from a few months ago and I think it was $250 for the ram air. Performance sells them for 50 less but I heard their claims and system was flawed.

Any reason why you just went with a cone filter and not the ram air Kurt?

I actually bought the cone like 2 years ago. It was sitting around for a while after it busted my meter. I don't even remember if ram air existed. Where's the ram air? Nevermind, I see the link in your post. Let me go check it out. I don't think it was available back then.

I talked to the guy at Powerhaus and he said that the combo of a chip, exhaust, and the ram air was a very nice solution for increased horsepower and performance for the 3.2.

I think the cat bypass would be additional help, but I was not considering that at the time, however, I may go for it as Florida (my county) has eliminated the visual inspection and smog test.
