When activating opening/closing the Sun-Roof on an 86 Carrera, should it stop automatically?

I'm not sure what you mean by "it".

If you mean the roof itself, then yes, of course it will stop when it can't open any more or close any more. If you mean the motor, that seems to run on my '87 until I release the switch.

when it is closed release the switch, when it is open, release the switch. It doesn't work like modern cars with a one-touch type setup. At least on my '89.

+1 on my '89. When the roof hits the bump-stop, take your finger off the switch.
