Red face 915, first gear gone already?

As I stated previously The tranny was gone thru in '96 and 16k mi ago. It's a 915 and you can barely get it into first without being at a total halt. My 930 has the synchros going and I know what that feels like but this is a little different. With mine I can avoid any knashing by applying slow deliberate pressure till it snicks into gear. But this one simply wont do anything but grind unless your stopped. It just doesn't feel the same. Could it possibly be something else? Doesn't 16k miles seem way too soon for this kind of total failure? It goes into all the other gears better than any 911 I have ever driven! Any thoughts? Thanks again!

I don't know much about trannies, but I was having asimilar problem, and when I replaced my clutch, it got remarkably better. Whgen was your clutch last checked out?

It was done at the same time, New lightweight aluminum pressure plate etc. However your saying that makes me wonder if it is adjusted correctly. Any gurus out there able to tell me if thats even a possibility? Thanks again

what kind of gear oil are you using? Mine would grind some unless I was going slow, but then I switched to Swepco 201 and it's much better.

I cant say, cause I haven't gotten that far yet. I have really only driven it back from Indy so far. If it were the synchro wouldn't second also be bad?

My suspiciion is that the clutch is maladjusted and is dragging. Does it grind every time going into reverse?

A dragging clutch can cause excessive wear on the 1st gear synchro, so it may already be too late!

No, it doesn't have any issues going into any other gears. I drove it back from Indy last year, it was kinda bad into first then. I got her going Sat and it was horrible. Then I took her out again last night and it was only bad again. Do you think the clutch is too loose or too tight? thanks

Not enough free-play essentially means means that the clutch never reaches full disengagement. This same problem can be caused by a clutch cable that is worn out and has multiple broken strands. The reaining strands stretch, effectively causing a loss of travel, so the movement at the throwout bearing is insufficient!

I suggest a new cable, clevis, locking pin/clip, and a tube of Swepco 101 grease.
