Post Going rate to change brake lines?

Hi all,

Curious, what the going rate should be to change brake lines?

I just changed my pads around 2k ago. I do not have an information regarding a brake line hose change. Hence, all this brake talk makes me think I should change my brake lines. The fluid needs to be changed anyway.

So, I was wondering, what are the going rates to change brake lines and fluid?

Well, the hoses are about $60 from Pelican. Craftsman metric flare nut wrench set is $24.99, and think $15 for a couple big bottles of brake fluid.

To bleed the brakes, a length of clear tubing should cost under a buck.

If you don't have a floor jack/jackstands/jack pad, you can buy those too and still be under what a mechanic would charge you for the job.

Oops, I should have been more specific. I was wondering what the mechanics charge to do this...

Thanks for the info.

I'll do almost everything else, except deal with brake fluid.

Nick,

Give it a whirl. It's not too bad of a job, just a knuckle-buster getting the old lines loose. FYI, the above post is right-on about the metric flare nut wrenches. A definate neccesity. I think I paid about 40 for them, Sears only had the chrome, professional kit there when I stopped in. Another little tip that made it easier for me; if your old hardware is frozen, let some penetrating oil sit on it overnight and use some vise-grips to break them loose.

You can do it. Pick up one of those pressure bleeders (try Clark at www.apexperformance.net), which make the process a TON easier than the old push on the pedal with two people routine.

I don't believe you should get charged more than two hours of shop time. That would be $200 or less for labor, plus parts. I think $100 would be more fair than $200, but then I'm not a professional mechanic.

Curious, Do the flexible lines under and near the steering rack get changed?

These are the lines I am most concerned about. They are starting to get frayed from the rack, and air conditioning lines.

I am a little confused. On my 82, there are hard brake lines from the master cylinder to the wheel wells in the front, and to the top of the bananna arms in the rear. From these hard lines are rubber soft lines that connect to more hard lines on the calipers. On my car, there are no brake lines under the steering rack. Did Porsche change the brake line routing from Carerra to SC? I know Pelican lists the same front brake hoses from 1974-89.

Are you talking hard or soft lines? The only flexible lines the front of my 82 come from a tab in the wheel well, to the hard line coming off the caliper, and are about 8 or 10" long. There is a picture here:

Perhaps I will look again tonight.

It seesm to me there were some rubber lines near the steering rack. Maybe I am confused by something else there.
