Question Which oil for 915 tranny is the best?

Please let me know your opinions for what oil or mix is recommended for everyday driving.....

The tranny is in good condition and shifts nice and smooth if I don't force it into first like crazy. Well, you simply don't force a 915 at all, right.

Ditto, Swepco. The most important thing by far is just changing it on a regular maintenance schedule regardless of the brand. (Don't we wish previous owners had done so.)

I was under the impression that swepco was for after the syncro's are worn and no longer shifting smoothly. . . .kind of a last ditch effort to get the syncro's to grab a bit better. (?)

Regular changing means once every year from what I understand, correct?

Do people change more often or less based on mileage and/or track (ab)use?

Once a year is what I do for all my cars. I would imagine the racing crowd changes more often. Maybe someone could enlighten us. Jack, Randy, anyone?

Swepco for my 915. Tried Mobil 1 and went back to Swepco as soon as UPS could deliver. I don't think the age or wear concern would move me off Swepco.

A bit off the subject, but if you do a R&R on the oil, do drop the 915's belly pan and tighten up the shift fork. Also consider getting one of the magnetic plugs for the fill-side plug. And of course as said by better minds than mine do pull the fill plug first as you don't want to find out later that this plug is stuck and you with it!

Also, I go with Swepco at this time. Trans is just rebuilt with about 2K on it.

Not a bad idea, John, but a few folks may need a translator!

The cover plate #5 is what John is talking about 'dropping' and the guide fork #6 is what needs to be tightened -- held on by three M6 nuts -- #8! A new gasket will be needed, and be SURE to clean the plate and everything attached to it with brake spray cleaner/degreaser ... before applying blue Loctite 242 to the three studs and torqueing the nuts for the guide fork! It wouldn't hurt to 'treat' the gasket with Loctite 518 before assembly, either!

I am about to replace the gasket (#9), mine is leaking fluid. When i do remove the plate (#5), should the car be in neutral or in a gear, or does it matter? Also, i have been told before, but what is the torque on the M6 nuts(#8) and what i think are M8 nuts(#11)?

As always, input is greatly appreciated.

Kemo,

Per the '78-'61 spec book ... cover plate M8 nuts get 22-25 Nm, or 16-18 lb-ft.

Guide fork M6 nuts get 8-9 Nm, or 6-7 lb-ft.

Shifter in neutral would be my choice, but it probably doesn't matter!

SWEEPCO! (I however, continue to use a synthetic..TORCO 75-140 GL6 with limited slip additive. And I believe the car shifts better & the gearbox internals do better than they did when I ran sweepco. But I sure ain't Bruce Anderson!)
