Average Life of a Fully-Upgraded Rebuilt 2.7?

I'm over halfway done with my 2.7 76 rebuild!

Just curious about how many miles I can expect if the rebuild is done right with all the upgrades....ie..tensioner upgrades, casesavers, turbo valve covers, fender oil cooler, etc? Does anyone have a high mileage upraded rebuilt 2.7 that they can offer as proof?

Thanks for your time!

They should easily last at least 100,000 miles. Most likely more. With all of the fixes, there is no reason it can't last 150,000 miles or more before developing leaks...

Yeah! He said case-savers! (not time-certs)

The life of an engine is inversely proportional to the weight of the owner's foot divided by the number of oil changes times missed shifts.....

Thanks as usual Wayne!

I should have gone the mech-engineering route, but its too late now. Just a few classes left in CS. I'd have been much happier.

BTW...can't wait for the book. Maybe I'll hold off on my project until you finish!

Mine has about 180k on a rebuild and is still running strong. With the right upgrades (and deletions) it's a solid engine.

My non-upgraded 2.7 with a plain rebuild is going on 150,000 miles post re-build. I have to agree with JSDSKI, it depends on how the car is driven.

I am planning a re-build on my 2.7, has it been a tough?

Mine had 100k when I purchased it.. 7 years and 147k later
it started to leak at No. 4 cylinder and leaks at the oil tubes.
I tore it down to investigate there were no case savers or time certs. That impressed me enough to keep it and give it the upgrades it deserved. At the time I was planning on the 3.0 upgrade it must have been the peer presure and bad rep.
but I figured what the heck I really liked the motor.

Mine name is Jorge and I have a 77 911S and I proud of it.;)

how long has it taken, and how much? looking to possibly rebuild my 2.7.

All my projects and toys are funded by side jobs..
I contract my design services to a few select companies.
I have 7 Dirt Bikes, My Rev Tech and My Baby and don't forget a ship load of tools.
Thats just the understanding the wife and I have so not to tax
our normal incomes and regular expenses.
So I have to spread my mad money out a little.
Cost for the Parts and Machining was a little over 5k It took about a year and a half between buying parts and scheduling machining building.. This was my first Porsche Rebuild so I took my time. Believe me with three teenagers I have little time as it is.

My rebuild has 110,000 miles on it and it runs good still but leaks alittle. All of the upgrades were done at time of rebuild. Original motor went to 95,000 miles just the way it came from the factory.

I have original 130,000 miles with upgrades done through the years. No leaks, just power and fun. Thought about upgrade to 3.0 but as the ole saying goes, "if it ain't broke why fix it?".

JeffW: You've got the same year S that I've got. Did you give it any performance upgrades? If it is stock, are you happy with the bottom-end? What about top speed?

The project is running pretty well. The only problem is, staying organized in limited workspace as well as limited time constraints. The only serious problem I've run into is a worn lobe on the right-side cam that was caused by the clogged oil spray tube. It also appears that there was a pulled head stud, because of the ONE timecerted stud. But other than that, the engine is in very good condition. I'm skipping out on the line-bore procedure because I live on a "college income," and the fact that when I graduate, I will have the money to upgrade, so I'll take the engine apart again for performance mods.

I've gotten through much of the rebuild, due to the fact that I've developed a friendship with a local porsche fanatic that has 911 machine work experience. He is doing my machine work as a favor, therefore cutting my expenses tremendously. I'm replacing all bearings, all valve cover studs, new cams, tensioner upgrads, and sendiing the case to CE to have the casesavers installed ($300). There are alot of odds and ends that will bump up the total a bit, however I'm expecting to have everything done for right around $2000. I've been fortunate to get by without purchasing the super-duper extraordinary fantastical porsche tools. But I'm doing very well defying the law that you must spend $7000 to rebuild a 2.7 right.

This is my first porsche rebuild, and heck, I've never driven a porsche before, but other than fulfilling my primal urges, the Porsche is my favorite time-consumer.

One more thing. I don't especially feel like having the hot-shots tell me "If its not done right the first time...ie...supermodifying every aspect of the engine, then its a waste of time." I'm doing the work within my budget constraint and upgrading the major flaws. I'll work anything I left out later, when the money is there. Thanks for your time on this thread. I'm sure I'll be begging for more advice in the near future; that is unless I get Wayne's new book first.
