Alternator ground strap

Where is the best place to attach a new ground strap to the alternator ?. The old one was old and tired and split at the alternator end, but it looked like it was bolted to the alternator casing before it came adrift when I was removing bits and pieces.

Mine ( a '75) is attached from the alt. case to the closest engine case bolt/nut.

Other end attached to the case. Good idea that you're replacing it (I replaced mine a while ago also) they build up a resistance with age.

I had a new ground strap made for me by the alternator shop when they rebuilt my alternator.

Picts here of thr ground strap. Huge difference as the old one was cracked and brittle.
another alternator/charging light bulb question

In the picture, you can see the bolt that my 1980 alternator ground strap attaches to. I believe it's 28 Ft lbs of torque. Once the car was back togeather, I realized I used a normal hex nut on that ground stud, not one that's shaped like the other case nuts. Not a huge deal, and I wasn't about to pull the fan/ alternator to fix it, but worth mentioning.

changing the alternator ground strap

I take it there is no problem or worry with compromising the case sealing/integrity if one removes the single engine case nut anchoring the alternator strap, cleans surfaces, replaces strap and re-torques to correct value? What is best strap to use? Size, stranded, woven, bare, length? Tx Bri

I don't believe there is any issues with the case leaking from everything I have read/ experienced.

I had the alternator shop make me one up. It's worked like a champ.
