Identification of Wooden Steering Wheel
Hello everyone,
I am in need of some assistance identifying an old Porsche steering wheel. I thought initially, it was an early 911 VDM, but now I have some reservations. The stamped date is 63 and wasn't 1964 the first year for the SWB 911's? Any assistance with this historical question would be greatly appreciated. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Nice looking wheel. The 63 mark is not a date code. It is a SWB wheel and if the spokes are steel, not the earliest iteration. The earliest had an aluminum rim (seen along the inside diameter) and aluminum spokes.
Looks to be in outstanding original condition.

Michael,
Thanks for clearing things up. It's not the early style as the spokes are steel. Not quite outstanding condition since the wood does have linear cracks between the dissimilar wood. I'm thinking about using it with my 68-L project. It's too cold to do anything else but think about details right now! David |
