Rear wheel Play

Last week end,I was doing some maintenance on my SC. I had the rear of the car in the air & noticed a 1/4 " of play in the right rear wheel. I just replaced the bearings, bushings, shocks,& t-bars. Should the wheel have any play ? I can move the wheel top to bottom about a 1/4 of an inch, the u-joint moves in conjunction with the wheel. Is this normal, or did I screw up ? when the e-brake is applied or when the car is in gear there is no play. Thanks for any imput. Craig

it sounds like the axle wasn't all the way in the hub after the nut was tourqued.
if it doesn't move when the brake/ebrake is applied it alsmost always means wheel bearing.
can someone second this?
