mangled tube on heat exchanger
The PO of my had new stainless heat exchangers put about 2.5 years and 3000 miles ago. The paper/aluminum hose on the driver's side won't stay on. I took a look and found that the tube is mangled. You can see where somebody tried to crimp the metal.
The problem is that the tube isn't really cylindrical. It's got a bit of a cone shape. I can fit the hose over it but as I tighten the clamp, because of the cone shape, it just slides back off. Shouldn't there be a metal elbow on the heat exchanger? There's one on the passenger side. Thanks Dave

I think I would be trying to straighten that crimped metal and then sliding a short length of stainless exhaust tube into the heat exchanger thats long enough for the hose clip to attach firmly. The stainless pipe to be a force fit into the heat exchanger.

That doesnt get flex hose, there is a 90 degree L that goes on to the heat box that the hose clamps to.

Thanks guys. I guess the mechanic that installed it mashed it down to get the flex hose on to it. The PO paid $600 for each heat exchanger plus installation - OUCH. I'll order an elbow and see if I can straighten it out without making it worse.

looks like one of those 'muffler expanders' from the parts store would return it to a point where it would workable again.

Ouch. That kind of butchery ought to generate an a$$ chewing. On the bright side, you don't have to have a perfect seal on the heat exchangers like you would a fuel or oil line. A small 6" crescent wrench with the jaws closed down will work well to allow you to reform the opening. -J
