hey 'early S man' -a question...
i wanted to ask you about something in the thread of the olive 1970T below: what did Mark Donohoe say about the 911T in the 1969 Car & Driver? My local library doesn't have that copy. thanks.

Raymond,
To paraphrase ... basically, that the 'T' was the most fun to drive flat out and the easiest to get the full performance out of, and the only one of the three to be geared correctly to match the engine characteristics. He did not feel that the tall gearing of the 'E' and 'S' for Autobahn driving was suitable for the American market or driving style or needs. One of these days ... I will dig that issue out of the archives and scan it ... along with the test of the original '67 911S!

OK, guys & gals ... it was where I remembered, so I didn't have to look through all 13 bookcases! Printing the pages of the article will turnout better if you copy the JPG images to your computer, and print them individually. Enjoy!
And, here's a tip for those scanning ANYTHING with images or print on the back side ... put a sheet of black paper/cardboard-- to eliminate the 'ghost' image bleedthrough from the back side! And, the limit on the 'Load Multiple' option on posts is 100K per pic, for a much better image quality! It works like the 'old' download procedure. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Warren, Thank you, this is the kind of stuff that makes this board so great. I vaguely remember this article, even though I was 10 yrs. old, I was addicted to car magazines,(still am), C&D used to be so great. It is so interesting that Porsche thought that the H/P suspension was THE thing at that moment in time, and chose to submit a bunch of quasi-Citroens for Mark Donahue to judge.
I also enjoyed the ad- I was thinking about that ad recently and trying to remember that German word for bra. That was the first time most people ever saw one of those. If and when I get a scanner, I will post R&T test of '72 2.4 911S, the one w/ sub-headline that says, "American super car performance without the stigma of low price". Other point: these cars were REALLY expensive when new, (for the time). Porsche used to have such witty ads, in '72 when 2.4 came out one said, " This year a T goes more like an E, an E goes more like an S, and an S just goes like H." ![]()

Wow...this is freakin' awesome. This article is 12 years older than I am! Thanks Warren!
Hmm..."steinschlagsschutzhülle"...according to my Deutsch dictionary...steinschlags=falling rocks, schutz=protection, and hülle=wrap. So...falling rocks protection wrap? Makes sense. In other news, a bra is commonly known as a BH, or Büstenhalter. ![]()

Thanks Warren!
Learned at least 2 things about Targas: according to Donohue they handle better than coupes. Muhahahahahah!! And the front wheel wells are larger, creating less foot space??? |

I have a book with a collection of old tests for the 70 to 72 911. Very nice reading. Dont know if it still is in print (ISBN 0948207124). At present I dont have a scanner available but if somebody is interested in a specific article i'll see if I can arrange one.

Great reading! It's priceless! Look at the performance of the "S". It's nothing less than a supercar even in today standard.

Warren, thanks VERY much! Now, you wouldn't happen to have a copy of the Feb. '72 C&D, the test of the 2.4's?

Speeder...."really expensive when new".... For a base line, my new '69 'Vette, 427, 4-speed, etc cost $5,200 with tax.

Paul,
Yes, I have the '72 C&D test, the '73 R&T 911S vs RSR test, and the '67 C&D 911S debut test, as well! ... I was thinking this thread is getting long enough to load, so it would be better to start new threads with descriptive subject lines so searching or browsing Pelicanheads would be more likely to know what the thread is about?

Good idea Warren. I think each article needs it's own thread and descriptive title. I may even archive these (and future early articles) on my website.
BTW: C&D also prefered the handling of the 2.4L Targa to the Coupes!!!! ![]() |
