71 Coupe roller, need help identifying parts
I bought a 71 Coupe roller today.

It has nice paint on it. It's been sitting inside in a shop in St. Louis for 20+ years. It has a lot of needs, but I'm ready for the journey. I'm thinking narrow body 3.0L hot rod. Will an early 915 fit without cutting the tunnel? I was told to fit a later 915, I would have to cut the top of the tunnel between the back seats. bracket in the middle? Round thing in the middle looks a bit like the top washer for the F. strut
but the ones on my '73.5 are more rounded avoid the 915 - the typ 911 is lighter, has a better feel when shifting, and has the wonderful road racing shift pattern |
Will the 901 handle a 3.0L motor's power?

for a good while if you don't drag race from a start; just baby it in 1st (which is only to get the car rolling anyway)

I think it might be a G50 that you are worried would require more room to fit. A 915 will fit not withstanding RWebb's comments on weight/longevity.

I'd say that the vinyl piece is a pre 69 drivers side armrest. The hole is where they interior door release button (can't really call it a handle) goes.

Looks like you found a very clean car. Congrats!
upholstered piece is an early SWB arm rest. the hole in the center is for the door catch release. Not needed on this car. The trim peices are for the rear quarter window. Looks like someone was in the process of an "update" to black trim. The modified breather was probably part of a KN watershield setup. Basically, the stock airfilter/airbox was removed and split to each carb. Now, let's clear up some misconceptions. the 915 will fit in the car. you may have to clearance the rear tunnel a few mm to clear the mounting ear on the top of the nose cone. You also have to install the correct shifter, shift rod and make sure that the stub axles match the CV joints of the year of the car. You will also need to run wires and convert to an electronic speedometer. All of this has been done before (me included) so you are not reinventing the wheel. If it were me I would keep a type 911 transmission that would have been original to the car. It will hold up to a 3.0 as long as you are not hamfisted and/or drop the clutch. |

I don't have a tranny for this car, so I'm going to have to find one, either a 915 or a 901. It is a very clean car! The shop owner was pretty tough about the whole sale, as in, you want it, here's the price. He wasn't willing to look for missing pieces or anything. He kept saying it is what it is. I showed up and gave him cash yesterday and everything changed. He offered to deliver it round trip 240 miles for a nominal fee and said he would help me with parts with his connections if I gave him a list. When I called to get his fax number today to send him a list, he had already found me a hood and front bumper! |

Agree with a lot said here.... drivers door armrest from short wheelbase car, seat rails, coupe aluminum trim, K&N watershield thingie... etc.
The advantage with this car is that it was built light weight. I would keep it that way with the 911 magnesium cased gearbox (it is not a type 901 box but shares gear and shaft internals). I always preferred the dogleg first anyway. I'd also not put an aluminum 3.0 in it because of the weight but stick with a magnesium .7R case from a 2.7 liter and build a decent RS-like engine. You'll also get to keep the clutch that came with the car. The car looks like a "T", so it will have a non-counterweighted crank. Find a decent 2.7 .7R case engine with larger ports (I think 35mm) in the head and use "S" or Solex cams and Weber 40's. Of my many 911's, my favorite was the one in which I built this 2.7 RS-like engine. BTW, one of the pieces looks like an aluminum dash trim from around the radio. Looks broken though. |
Rd911t. I happen to have a 911 transmission sitting on my garage floor it is from my 70T that is donating its vital parts to my 73 build. I live an hour and a half from stl. PM me if you would like to get together. BTW, I almost bought that car myself a couple years ago.
