Whale tail and A/C - is there a mechanism here for air flow?

Guys,

Went to the shop to reload the a/c system with gas. The shop owner asked me if there was not suppose to be a closing system of some sort on the small "grill" opening on the whale tail. He claims that air will flow thru there because its easier, he imagined a system that opened and closed as the a/c is turned on/off so the air can be redirected to flow thru the larger "grill" (condenser) opening. Here are some pics:

From the top, the small at bottom of the pic and larger (condenser) at top:

From inside, nothing there, free flow....

your best bet is a fender condenser kit from Griffiths or ZIMS so as to minimize the extra heat in your engine bay...

Funky deck lid.

For the deck lid condenser to work effectively all the air moving through the engine deck lid "grills" should pass through the condenser. It would appear the odd second small grill opening would allow air to bypass the condenser opening, hence less air moving through the condenser... not good for a stock system.

Unless you have a good reason for the second grill opening I'd suggest blocking it off if you want AC.
