Correct tool for flywheel bolts?
I could sure use some help from a more experienced porsche wrench. I have an early 911 motor w/ 215mm six bolt flywheel. The bolts look like a 12 point socket head. Does this require a serrated wrench? If so, what size and is this a common tool? It doesn't look like something your average auto parts store would carry. Thanks for any help.

I would try the average auto parts store to see if the carry the K-D line of speciality tools. You can find the bit there.

Tool is sometimes known as a 12mm triple square; it is not a torx bit. Clean out the bolt heads well and keep the tool well seated while you loosen the screws. You do know these flywheel screws are one time use items; you'll need to use new ones when you reinstall the flywheel. Jim

Some sources call the tool an XZN drive bit, others refer to it as a 'Polygon Drive' ... it is an internal-wrenching European aerospace standard design. It is in the same 'family' as the smaller bolts used on some CV-joints by VW and Porsche. The designation is by thread size, so I have the 'M8' bit for CV-joints and the 'M10' and 'M12' bits for flywheel bolts.

The 12 pt. 12mm star tool is also made by Lisle Tools and I've seen them at Pep Boys.

Thanks for the help guys. Found it just as you called it. The right tool for the job makes things a snap. Thanks also to you Jim, as I did NOT know these were one time use. I knew some of the internals were (rod bolts and such). I'm a newbie on porsche engines so expect some more basic questions. I'll try to do a little research before I spring to many on you. These porsche engines are just SO much more interesting than the big V-8s I grew up on. You really have to mind your p's & q's. Thanks again for the help (direct and indirect, I'm learning alot from the postings).
