How to test airbox?
I am waiting for my internal parts of my '78 3liter to come back from the machine shop and I thought I should test my airbox while it is off. I've seen pictures of an airbox submersed in a big tub and even read about testing them in the bathtub. BUT
I can't find specific directions on how and what to hook up. Can somebody point me at the right thread? or just enlighten me? I have shop air and a big tub. I see a pressure gauge and a bleed valve... I can get rubber stoppers... 7 right? Ok Now what? thanks! |

you need a regulator to keep the pressure low maybe 2 lbs/per sq in.

CIS air box..........
Bryant,
To test the CIS air box for leak/s, you need to either pressurized the air box using continuous supply of compressed air (regulated 1 - 2 psi.) or apply vacuum pressure. Please see pictures below: You need six (6) rubber stoppers plus one (1) if you have a pop-off valve. A plate with gasket to seal the throttle body mounting base and another one for the CSV. One or two clamps to hold the rubber stoppers for the intake in place. Otherwise, they would be popping out as soon as you put pressure in the air box. ![]() The second method, is applying vacuum (negative pressure) which I like if the air box is good. But the problem is when the air box is leaking, you won't know where the leaks are compared to the first method. ![]() The leaks in an air box are commonly occurring at the seams of the air box or if you have a pop off valve around the seat and o-ring. ![]() Contact Robey2 ( Brian R.). He has long thread in the Engine Rebuilding Forum and recently did a similar test. If you have any question, just ask. It is X'mas time. Keep us posted. Tony |
