My New Barn Find

I just purchased this 71 targa last month. I have had later model porsches but I truly love the original feel and sound of the early porsches. I bought this car off Craiglist and ironically the owner had misspelled porsche and I was the first to see the ad. I have renewed the suspension and the engine runs great. I intend to keep it as a "survivor" and leave the paint and body alone.

Nice. Sometimes stupidity has its advantages.

Very jealous of your purchase. LOVE the old Targas. She looks pretty nice in the pics. Please add more with some more details.

I'll post some more pics later. There was a huge layer of dirt and mud on and under the car. The body is clean and appears to be free of rust and the paint is original. The previous owner did some upgrades to the engine with E cams and SSI's.

Good catch on the rims. But they may not be to smaill. It may suggest what trim level this car is. Those look like 14 inch Fuchs. Found only on the 1970 and 1971 E cars. Is this an E car? If so , Great find.

Good luch with the project.

Cheers,

The wheels look properly original to me.

14" were primarily used on the hydropneumatic suspension cars. Many were converted back to torsion bars early on. For good reson, as far as I'm concerned.

However, 14" wheels on skinny race rubber was a cheap way to get "lower gears"...

Taking a picture of a long hood without showing the long hood is like taking a picture of a swimsuit model and not seeing any cleavage. More pics please!

Wide "S" Trim Strips

Nizze find. I love the wide "S" impact strips on early 70's 911s. Maybe Porsche COA info details could help you with the rims? IMHO Keep it bone stock and change the rims to nothing more than 15 x 6 Fuchs if that was the OEM equipment(NO FLARES PLEASE!!!). REMEMBER TO GET THE FUCHS WITH THE PROPER CENTER CAPS to stay period correct for peace of mind. IT may have been an unknowing Rim swap by PO. If you want speed get a late 911 but the early 70's are pure "you gotta drive this one yourself because there are no electronic controls". Sliding thru tight turns on 15" tires is a throwback rush. M2CW Enjoy the ride for what it is and do not worry about what it isn't. Happy motoring. Gotta love the old Targas for top off rides.

Nice find! Do you know what the official color or paint code is? It looks like medium ivory.

The rims are 14" and the tires are 205/60. I agree about swapping out to 15x6, presently the tire proportions don't sit well with me either.

It is medium ivory. The paint is pretty decent except where the oil cooler is and various chips.

I renewed all of the bushings, etc. and installed new bilsteins as well. I have had many early BMWs and later Porsches but frankly I wish I had discovered the long hoods long ago!

Nice find. Yes, leave it as-is as much as possible. Bigger diameter Fuchs would be a nice upgrade.

Being a '71 either the "deep" or "flat" 15X6 fuchs were used. Porsche used up the supply of "deep six" wheels, which were designed for tube use with no safety bead, then switched to the "flat 6" which had the safety bead during the '71 model year. The deeps are considered more attractive by some, but the flats are safer for tubeless use. Either wheel is considered "proper" for a '71.

"Discovered" the long hood made me chuckle...I really am older than dirt. I was into P-cars when they were new.
