Part # for these wires?
 

I couldn't find these in my PET. Anyone know the pn?

They are two wires that go from this connection point through the engine tin paneling to a magnetic sensor on the flywheel. Must be RPMs?

You will need to order the sensor, which will come with the wires and the appropriate connector on the other end.

Search term "reference sensor". You'll get plenty of hits. Couple of threads in the last week. The white wire is your cylinder head temp sensor. The other two are the same part. One is your reference sensor, the other is your speed sensor. There is a BMW part that is virtually identical and half the price. Pelican sells both. -J

A fellow Pelican sent me this link Bosch 0261210002 Engine Crankshaft Position Sensor : Amazon.com : Automotive and I bought 2 of them for less than half the cost of the "Porsche" part. They are Bosch parts.

Yep the BMW part does indeed work just fine. Used them myself on a few friends' cars.

0 261 210 002 which appears to be from E24 (635 and 735) and E28 (535) BMW models. On Pelicanparts, this equates to the sensor for 535 cars from 1985-1988 and 533 cars from 1983-1984 which is BMW part number 12-14-1-708-619-M14

These sensors do work and the plugs are exactly the same. So no cutting/splicing like an O2 sensor. So there is no need to buy the actual Porsche part number!


Note that when you remove the sensors, one of them is captured in the mount by a sleeve. You have to be very patient removing the sensor so you don't booger up the sleeve. The sensor is junk anyway, so no worries about damaging it. Just don't want to mangle the sleeve.

By the way, while you're in there? Take a look at that fuel line just above your circled part of the picture. That hose is known to crack and leak.

Thanks everyone! Yes, I am doing the fuel lines too. This is actually the reason I dropped the engine. But now I'm addressing other maintenance things while the engine is out.

The top white harness on the bracket is the CylHeadTemp sensor. If the white harness on the bracket only has 1 wire connector then also change the CHT sensor to the later 2 wire one while your at it.

Anyone been able to pin down and source the 3 female connectors for the cyl head temp sensor and crankshaft position sensors?

After being exposed to engine heat for 25+ years they become brittle and start falling apart. I've learned that cyl head temp sensor will prevent starting on my 3.2L when the connector is loose.

I have no idea on the ref/speed sensor connectors.

But I think the CHT is the same style as a fuel injector, if so these are easily available.

Post a picture of the connector, I may have a source.

I assume he needs the engine harness side (females). The sensor side comes with the sensors.

The top white connector is the sensor side for the CHT and I think this is a standard fuel inj type connector.

The bottom 2 black connectors are the same and these are the Ref and Speed sensors, these have 3 wires. No idea where to get these?

Is there a p/n for the cyl head temp sensor connector (2 pin) harness side?
I don't see it called out as a separate item in the parts books. If this one fits the job.

First, verify the CHT connector is a fuel injector connector.
Try plugging the CHT connector into/onto a fuel injector. Try injector #3 as the CHT harness should easily reach injector #3. DO NOT attempt to start the engine! You are just verifying that the CHT sensor connector is exactly like a fuel injector connector.

If it is a standard FI connector you can get these on ebay cheap:

Ok, found them at mouser for you. Part numbers are:
571-2821911 for the 3 pin and 571-826008-5 for the 2 pin.
The rubber boots are not correct for them at mouser or other places. I imported mine from Europe and if you PM me, I'll send you them for my cost. I have a bunch for the engine harnesses I'm building. :)
