How loud exactly are megafones
Hey all I'm new to this.
I did a search and couldn't find any sound files or information. How loud exactly are megafones? I have a 2.0L 1969 with carbs. Do you think I would get away with driving my car on the street with megafones? Does anyone have a sound file? I think my heat exchangers are leaking, and maybe my muffler, and megafones are cheaper, and give more power. What else should I look at? |

Megaphones are way too lud for the street. They do however produce a great sound.

Probably only around 112-115 dBA from 20 feet away ... as you blip the throttle! Open headers will get you a ticket in all 50 states!
A dual-outlet 'sport' muffler based on the OEM 'banana' muffler is what you should be looking for! Pelican has a nice one by Dansk.

Next time The Racers Group is at your local racetrack, ask Kevin Buckler to show you. Suffice to say, it's loud!

Don't even try it. You could possibly get away with it on a track car that you gingerly snuck out of town on a Sunday morning to go racin'...but on a regularly driven street car, uh uh.
A few days ago I took my dual-Weber 44'd 2.4 914/4 out for a spin with no muffler on the header -- I'm reworking the exhaust setup so I figured what the heck. It sounded killer but I think every neighbor within 4 blocks was peering out their windows wondering WTF was going on. (It was either that, or the fact that the car is bright orange and they probably have no clue what it is). Sooo, I'm setting it up so I can bolt up a megaphone or one of 3 different mufflers depending on what kind of backpressure & noise level I'm looking for. I'll probably use a custom Flowmaster 40 setup for any street driving...still very loud but not nearly as much of a cop magnet as open pipes.

I have used dual supertrapps sticking out the back on the street. Was louder than the 82dbA allowed at the San Diego track, but not bad for the street. At Willow SPrings I took off the baffles and left the inserts in.....almost straight pipes, but about 10% sound deadening.....

Amazing coincidence! Today I did it. I junked my existing (std) silencer, cut the flanges off it and welded two straight through pipes onto them.
I sounded beeeeeeeautiful, but far too lound for even me. The next step was to cut the new pipes off the flanges and weld on two 240mm long oval silencers on. These also come straight out the back and are substantially quieter. Tonight a fellow Porsche racer/fundi/owner of a 'R' replicafollowed me to a meeting and said it sounds great and, wait for it, IT ALSO BELCHES OUT FLAMES as it crackles and pops on the over-run. This on a bog standard 2.2 T motor with Zeniths. The only problem is that mid and low range power has gone for a ball of sh.t. Top-end feels stronger though. I'm obviously going to have to change the jetting and my next step is to fit six individual sock type foam filters. But hey, it sounds really cool and the 'zorts don't look to bad either.

SteveW,
Install a 2" crossover pipe (also called an 'H' pipe) before the two mufflers to connect the two banks ... and you will regain a bunch of the lost torque at the bottom end!

Thanks Warren - I'll try that next week.
There's a track day on Saturday and I reckon a lot of people will be disappointed when they discover that the beeeeautiful noise and lound snap, crackle and pop is coming from a little ol 'T' Cheers
