Car won't start after washing

I gave my 84 coupe a good wash yesterday and discovered it would not start afterwards. This car has NEVER had an issue with starting in the three years I have owned it.

I recently did some work on it including oil return tube replacement, replacing of some oil lines, removal, cleaning and reinstallation of the stock exhaust. I don't think any of that would cause the issue.

I also did an ignition system tune up with new plugs, fuel filter, distro cap and rotor. The cap I put on was Beru, the distro cap that was on it before was Bosch. The plug wires are Beru which might be originals but they look in good shape with no cracks. I also took the K&N filter that was on it off and put the stock airbox back on with a new air filter. I drove the car a couple days ago and it ran fine, no issues at all.

I pushed the car back into the garage and took the distro cap off, cleaned it with WD 40 (no water that I could see). I also took each plug wire off the cap and sprayed WD40 in there and cleaned them out too. I bought some dielectric grease and put some grease on each of the plug wires where they go into the plugs and reinstalled. None of that made any difference. I rechecked my plug wires on the cap and they are in the correct order.

I let it dry out overnight and tried again this morning, still no go. The engine cranks but will not fire.

Ideas?

Air, spark, fuel. You need to establish whether you have spark and fuel at the plugs. Use a spare plug and have someone turn the ignition. Do not hold the wire and plug but place it where the plug touches metal. If no spark, you have to investigate back at the dizzy.

Time for basic troubleshooting and avoid dwelling on the wash as it may mislead you. Fuel and spark. Does the fuel pump run? Clip your timing light to any plug wire. Does it flash while the engine cranks? Really sounds electrical to me. Either fp, fp relay, or spark.

Mystery solved. I unplugged the DME relay and whacked it a couple times with my flashlight, then reinstalled. Fired right up.

New relay on the way!

Hrm, here's a follow up question. Our host has three different relays available with markedly different prices. There is a Kaehler one for $28, then OEM is $37 and genuine Porsche is $95.

Which one should I get?

An always-elegant solution.
