Long Over Due Intro (lots of pics)

Hi guys, I'm Trent. I'm an engineering student at the University of North Texas in Denton. My dad and I have been driving and fixing (mostly fixing) Porsches for the past 8 years now. My car is an 83 911SC and his are a 92 C2 cabriolet and an 88 930 cabriolet. We've rebuilt the motor in the SC as well as the 930.

I know you guys are total suckers for pictures so I've included all that I have.

Here they are in the driveway after a wash 6 years ago.

Here's mine before the paint went all to hell from the sun.

The 930 had a pre-detonation problem and ate a piston crown's edge.
Here's before the rebuild.

We pulled the motor and after "only" 6 years managed to get it back together.

Everything was powdercoated, unfortunately everything exhaust related didn't hold up in the long run.

I wish we'd taken pictures of the bottom end assembly.

Here's the 930 at the shop where we installed the MSD ignition.

Not even a couple months after the 930 motor went out the one in my car

crapped out too. A barrel nut for one of head studs backed out and the

cylinder got flame cut.

Here's the post rebuild pics.

2 years later my brother over-revved my car and broke a rocker and bent a

valve. Had to drive down from Waco to assist in pulling the motor.

Here I am on the ground with my buddy from Baylor in the background.

Last year the paint really started to go to hell on my car. Repainted the

hood, didn't turn out too great with all the damn dents hidden on it (curse

black cars!!). Decided to re-do the whole car when the roof got

"sunburnt."

Here it is after razor stripping.

My dad hard at work:

One of the first things to go when interior will be redone.

The dash is in pretty poor shape too.

100 points to anyone who can guess what bike that carburetor goes to in the picture of the engine case half.

Great stuff!!! I work on our cars and bikes with my daughter who id finishing her Masters in forensic Psych and works for the FBI. Nothing like good times with your child in the garage working on our 912, 911, 944 (her car) and the Alfa GTV. We also have 12 Ducati's of various vintage the we ride and work on!!!

If those machine tools are in your garage or home shop I hate you in so many ways...;-)

Welcome and way to slide in sideways! :-)

It's obvious you have passion and patience. Nice collection, how do you decide when it's time to go for a drive?

Welcome to the forum, Trent! It looks like you've been at it a while.

What branch of engineering are you studying? (There are quite a few engineers here, myself included.)

Thanks for the kind words guys.

fanaudical- I'm studying Mechanical and Energy Engineering. It's the same as regular ol' Mechanical Engineering except you get to choose two energy elective courses (petroleum or nuclear related).

Jcslocum- I sure wish those machines were mine. Maybe I'll get just ONE after this engineering thing starts paying off. My dad and I also restore old Honda motorcycles. We've got about a dozen (though mostly in pieces). My dad still has his '79 KZ1000 that he bought at my age.

shadowjack1- You're definitely right about that. Everyone thought it was bad enough when it was just the SC and the 930, then we were declared "nuts" when the 964 joined the mix.

While I'm here, would anyone mind telling me how much work is involved in replacing this and how much it would cost me to have it welded in.

Pelican Parts - Product Information: 911-503-151-00-GRV-OEM

The car had been rear ended while in the hands of the previous owner and was repaired VERY poorly. The crossmember above doesn't seem too bent up so it shouldn't need replacing.

Also, anyone have ideas on refilling that foam the previous owner ripped out of the dash?

Yeah I figured 6 years on the forum is long enough to wait to start doing an intro.

Ed- I like to joke that I'm going to school for engineering so I can pay for my "habit."

Cherry Bomb- Whenever there's a drought we take the cars out, it seems to make it rain whenever we start them up and want to go for a drive.
