Where do you get forceps?
 

Hey All,

Have read in a few other threads about using locking forceps to install new hood struts. Just wondering where you purchase them from? I would like to pick them up locally if possible.

Harbor Freight has multiple sizes. You'll find some other stuff to buy there for sure.

also known as Hemostats and also at Princess Auto .. A Hemostat locks to hold the object, (those little clips that you cant set with chubby fingers ) not too sure a foreceps do... Tie a piece of dental floss to the clip so you can retrieve it a few times before it finally installs for you!..LOL

In my experience you don't need the clips....leave them off.

Ask someone for a high end roach clip.:D

My veterinarian sells old ones for $2 each, different sizes, and they also have picks and scissors. Money goes to animal charities. Ask a local vet, and see if they will sell you some old stuff.

Local head shop, ask for roach clip(long), wait isn't this the 70s?

You could always get them like I did...from your local emergency room after they put some stitches in your face. I don't recommend that path however. +1 on the harbor freight suggestion as well.

that's how i get mine. knowing ahead how outrageous the charges will be i think they owe me a few pairs at a minimum.

I think the forceps can have locks as well. Assuming the thingies with loops at the tips are forceps.

I looked at Princess Auto yesterday but couldn't see them. They had long needle nose pliers (but didn't lock) or long vice grips but seemed kind of bulky.

Look for "Kelly forceps" on eboy. Aesculap are the best, US made, top quality. You can buy a nice pair for about 20 bucks. Harbor freight only has import knockoffs, which are fine, but you can tell the difference.

The ones with the looped ends are referred to as "placenta forceps". Most of them have ratcheting locks.

Fun catalog to burn some time in. Get to a retail store if you are able. They will probably have a tank periscope next to the hemostats.

Fleabay your best best.

Name for them:

Hemostats, Needle holders, Sterilizations picks(bigger ones)

Hu-friedy, aesculap, SS white, miltex. Some of the better brands, really better quality steel.



Types

Kelly (like scissors) Castroviejo (you squeeze them with your whole hand), Mosquito (small )

LOL. There are some jobs in the trunk or under the dash that are really awkward, mostly because of access. But the locking clips on the hood struts really didn't seem that hard when I did them. Just line everything up and push the clips on with long-nose pliers.

McMaster-Carr Forceps

Forceps are any grasping tool. They can be tweezer like (Adson forceps) or plier-like for holding a sponge like the Foerster at the top.

Hemostats are a variety of forceps that lock and are used to control arterial bleeding among other things. They come in different shapes and sizes with a Kelly being a nice curve with taper and teeth and useful for cars. The lower clamp is a little bigger and is called a Mayo. I use one like that to gently clamp off fuel or vacuum lines.
