troubleshooting rough running '86 carrera - found this today low behind throttle body , comes off of a blue plastic looking 1" round piece with another slightly larger hose. any suggestions appreciated. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1361829179.jpg

It may go to the back of the throttle body... get a mirror so you can see if everything is pluged up..

I can look when I get home; I have the same vintage.

Hi,

OK, so a couple of ideas, There is a slightly larger hose, that runs from the ambient temperature valve just above the oil tank on the right to the rear of the throttle body. The small hose should do a "U" shaped loop from the thermo valve to another connection below the rear of the throttle body. As suggested by Panarai, a mirror may give you a better idea. I have a picture on my other computer of what mine looks like - will go take a look in a minute.

thanks - maybe you can see better than me back there - am using a mirror that is not the greatest ----still very tough to scope this out.. ran car with this plugged but no difference - of course there was the point at which this connects that would still be open... am excited this may be possible cause of poor running that came on suddenly ..

dcarlson 02-25-2013 01:44 PM

if I could see or feel a nipple it connects to I have a chance of getting it re-attached ..maybe. ( I think I have small block chevy hands..)

Your hands and my hands...German hands must be way small :=)

So here is the back of the throttle body. One of the small hoses is a U-shape off the thermal valve to the throttle body and the other goes from the thermo valve to the ambient temperature valve beside the oil tank.

Skip! that is a beautiful picture. exactly what I am dealing with. thanks very much. will report back after I get at it.

dcarlson 02-25-2013 02:31 PM

reaching that will be a 'challenge' - how did you take pic? - do you have a backseat or firewall? lol . Anyway, we know where it should connect.. I have a cabriolet - can I get at it from back seat?

No, but if you want to drop the engine, it's really easy to access - which is how I got the picture last week doing some manifold gasket replacements and reference sensor replacements. Good luck.

After thought: Just thinking, if you remove the rubber elbow on top of the throttle body, you might have a much easier time. There are just a couple of clamps holding it on, so that probably makes the most sense.

Indeed. have had many fellow Pelicans help me with my multiple engine issues on my '84. Almost got it GTG. Let me know how it goes.

Hey! Success..Removal of that hose up top gave just enough room to get that vac hose re-attached -(45 minutes of coaxing..). Started up, she ran rough for a 10-15 seconds like computer was sorting it out/adjusting, then settled in for familiar nice steady idle I have not heard since November. Wanted to go for a run and warm it up but there's an icy rain and salt on roads so that can wait, but I think we're gonna be good. Happy camper to say the least. Thanks again Skip and those who told me here two months ago to check all the vac lines..

Fantastic news. Let's hope it stays that way for a long and trouble-free summer driving season. You say salt and ice rain - where is home (your profile doesn't say)? I'm keeping mine in the garage (less its trip to the paint shop this Friday for the month), until those roads have NO sighting of salt in April. These cars will just melt with the salt.

Nice bike. Ah yes, the storm - it's headed this way apparently. Let's keep our fingers crossed that it goes quick.

All the best.

we get teased a lot here. it will be snow on the ground for a few weeks, then suddenly a day two of 50 and everything melts but the salt is still there. then it will rain for 2-3 days, then dry up one day only to have a snowstorm the next. all my toys are sleeping right now too...
