The repair saga begins...

I had these delivered from my friendly Porsche Centre today.

Up close, they are a frickin' work of art. I sat on my couch admiring them up close for about 20 minutes... They were the cheapest I had found. I checked Pelican's site, but I was able to buy them for AUD$500 total ($US285) delivered, so it's line-ball when you factor in shipping to Australia. Sorry, Wayne.

I have made progress with the other car's insurer. They've assessed the damage and have allowed my guy to strip the car and report on unseen damage (muffler, heat exchangers etc) and then I'll be able to settle with them. I'm going to get them to cut me a cheque for the damages and then I'll organize repair through my guy.

In the meantime I am starting to stockpile the parts... I think I'll keep an eye open for Carrera guards and two 15x8" Fuchs.

Adam, is the chassis ok?

If it is a big deal to set it up on a jig to find out maybe get a really good wheel alignment person to look at it. A couple have looked at my SC and commented that it's nice and straight and taut. So I would assume the measurements show up anything odd.

Good luck Adam, I hope everything goes smoothly & well. A bottle of good scotch or two may help you through the rough spots?

You should give the repair guys a couple of disposable cameras to document their work. Just so that in the future any prospective buyer could see that the work was done properly.

GeorgeK,

It was just a passing fancy for flares. I've decided to keep it skinny, but thanks for your support of the SBWDP (Skinny-bodied World Domination Plot).

Slammed1000,

Oh well, it's only money... cheap taillights is what I'm really after now.

Thing to consider for us "down-under's" when bidding on $200.00 H4'S from e-bay .----The lenses are left hand drive, so the purchase of RHD glass kinda ups the price a bit ! Ask me how I know!--anybody want a pair of brand new H4 lenses?-----no reasonable offer refused !! [you pay the freight from New Zealand]

I was going to say the same as Bob, US knockoffs or factory would still require RHD lenses = $$

Well done on the lights, I just ordered a set of H4s (keeping my H1s safe from harm) $550 delivered to Townsville was the best I could do.

Bob,

Good point! I had thought of that when I bought one new headlamp for the '89, but for some stupid reason, that RHD argument didn't even enter into it when I needed two. It's kinda lucky that I didn't get them thru Pelican.

Adam,

Good to see that the project is underway and the hea lights are a real work of art, as he said, i spent a few minutes looking at them last night

I hope that it doesnt cost to much for the tail lights.

you know my opinion about the carrera guards, leave it skinny dude, the way it is meant to be. At the end of the day it is your car, if putting the guards on floats your boat then do it

i can't wait until it is back on the road, i am also hoping that the unseen damage is only the mufler and the heat exchangers.

I better follow up on the RHD H4s too.

At my last WOF (Warrant of Fitness - checks the car is in roadworthy condition every 6 months) for my LHD ex-Italy 69T, the guy said:

"How long have your lights been pointing to the right"

Me: "I'm guessing since 1977, when the car came to NZ"

Him: "Oh, ok"

I guess he couldn't be arsed getting me to change them.

Either way, if H4s are NZ$600 or so, I think I'll get some and Ebay off my H1s to the highest bidder - I have NO serious attachment to them... it is ridiculous to me that anyone would value them as they do. If I can make money on the deal, I will be pleased (the H1s aren't perfect)...

Adam....
I got really lucky in getting a pair of tail lights from Ebay....brand new in boxes, with lenses, for about $350.
The deals are there...I watched for almost a year to find mine.
Good luck
Bob

Hey Paul, thanks for the tip.

About 4 days before the accident, Matt Holcomb and I were down at Aporschapart looking for bits and pieces when I nearly parted with $195 for two new lenses. They were on the counter and I had the credit card in my hand, yet for some unknown reason, I decided at the last minute to defer the purchase. There was no way, I could have known that 4 days later, the ones I would have fitted would have been damaged.

I guess someone wass looking out for me. But I'll order the lights and new seals from Aporschapart next week!
