Holy moly $ 550.00 for a gallon of paint !

Just purchased a gallon of B.A.S.F. German division single stage black paint. The distributor told me that the color I bought was "cheap " red or yellow would be $ 800.00 a gallon. I hope it is worth it.

I just paid $35/gallon for Benjamin Moore paint when painting my house - and I thought that was steep!

What could possibly make paint cost $500+ per gallon? Development costs? Hazardous waste taxes? Mark-up?

Those prices are close to the prices for the color changing "cameleon" type paints with the prism chunks in it or paints used for refinishing aircraft like the paints used up in Boeing's paint hanger in Everett. Something to remember, it's not the cost of the paint, but its' the cost of and time spent in the preparation before the paint is ever applied.

Black is the cheapest, its a stock pack color, off the shelf, no mixing, many use it, porsche, vw bmw etc, its all the same, well the color is anyhow, what else do you get with that? any thinner, hardner? maybe a cool BASF sticker?

W.C. Field had a saying about people like this

"There a Sucker born every minute"

I could have gotten the whole car painted at MAACO and still had money left over to take the little women shopping.

Black is not black and white is not white. Different manufacturers have different mixes for it, because they have different amounts of tone in each. I don't know the specifics but I know that all blacks and whites aren't the same. That said, maybe they all start w/ a certain base black and add to that, I dunno.

Is that for a sprayable gallon including the hardner and reducer? My supplier sometimes quotes it that way to new customers so that they have all the necessary materials.

Aside from that, black should not be anywhere near $500- a gallon, unless it jumps out of the can and onto the car by itself.

Reds and oranges tend to be the most expensive stock colors. Anything with red and yellow toners are high. I just did a 914 for a customer in Signal Orange, it was $100- per quart for just the color.

Shop around.

What I meant to say "black is black" was that my 86 911 is black, its a base stock color, it is not a mixed color, there are a lot of other blacks which do have some other colors mixed in them for a special type of black but many cars have the base black color which is rather cheap, I can get a gallon of single stage black of SW black for about 90 bucks and the color always matches perfect.

What JW said. If you don't have an account and just walk in, you get whatever they think you can afford, unless you know the paint supplier. In theory, they're not ( in most places) even supposed to sell to you unless you can certify a disposal stream ...

The best paint and body shop in Denver told me that Porsche 700 Black is not true black; it has a small amount of brown mixed in.
