Hey guys,
This was wierd. My mechanic has this Euro spec/delivery 78 sportomatic. How odd is that! Does anyone know how many were built? Is 78 the last year? It's only got like 65k original, one owner miles and might be for sale. It also has chrome trim instead of the anodized. Thought you guys (and Pinkerbelle) would like to hear about this one. What's so weird? The Sporto was offered as a special order option until 1980. Nothing I've seen references how many were ordered in 78 or 79, the only years it was offered on the SC. Can't have been many, since Porsche discontinued it solely because people weren't buying them.

This car was a Euro delivery, Euro spec SC. Was the sporto an option in the states, also?
Anyway, just a wierd car. Did you know that the sporto in an SC has only three forward gear choices? I was really surprised to see the car. Perhaps it isn't as odd as I thought. Regards, David |

Yes, Sportomatic was available in the US as an option. Nope, didn't know about the gears, but I've always wanted to try a Sporto just to see how it felt. People complain about them, but I can't imagine they're worse than the 915 and it's "stick in a bucket of rocks" shifting. The car ought to be cheap with those two strikes against it (gray market Euro *and* Sportomatic).

Hey! Easy on the sporto! If I was like those geniuses who decide to surf down in the Gulf and had my left leg bit off by shark I could still drive my p-car could you? Therein lies the beauty of the sportomatic.

Well, with the torque of the 3.0 and the quick shifting of the sporto, it would be a nice around-town kinda ride. I liked it, wouldn't mind having it as a second P car for the ease of driving it offers.
As a Euro car, it has no sunroof, roll up windows, no air, chrome trim, 16 in Fuchs and it's for sale. If anyone is interested, let me know. It's not mine, of course, but I could put you in touch. Later, David |

My 78 911SC was originally Sportomatic but I had it converted to manual using an 83 gearbox which I had reconditioned.
The fact that it only had 3 forward gears was very frustrating and the torque converter was using up a lot of the engine power. A sporto is actually a non-Porsche car as far as driving is concerned. On the upside most Sportos had an easier early life and lower mileages so they make good used buys. So my recommendation is buy one and convert it to manual. The car is EPA/DOT legal. It has about 65k original miles. Red with black interior. Super clean. Was the wife's car. Has both spoilers also.

Hello
Porsche even made them up to the last SC in 83. Most buyers where handicaped and not everyone could handle that like Otto Mathe. Also Mr.Bott was a big Sportomatic fan and mostly had sporto, auto or PDK in his cars. he had enough "stress" driving the stick shift cars all day. Grüsse ![]() |
