New take on 964 dek lid install

In the process of installing a 964 deck lid to a earlier car I have found a different way to mount the lid.

I wasn't very happy with using the 964 hinges. These hinges have mounting holes to the body that are 8mm in size, while the mounts on the car are 8mm wide but are much higher vertically. Then you have to modify the hinge to meet the wider mounting position on the lid.

What I did was buy two new hinges (65-89 style) the right one a turbo type for the shock support. Then cut them in half (make sure you cut them low enough because the spoiler has "ears" that hang below the lid). I used a vice as a guide for the hack saw to get a strait cut. Then using two 90 degree aluminum, bolt them back together spacing the upper half about 1 1/16" out. A new hole on top of the hinge needs to be drilled for the 964 lid to bolt to. Once both two halves are together you can try a test install to see if it works right. When installing the hinge to the body the upper half that is spaced out will rub against the curved part of the rain gutter you can just dog ear this a little to gain clearance. Now try to install the deck lid, if you car has good paint be very careful not to chip the paint. Use a lot of washers to raise the lid between the hinge until you find out how high it needs to be. On mine the right side was low, had to use a lot of washers so once I saw how much was needed I unbolted the 90 degree aluminum and added a spacer to raise it up. Once all of this is done you will probably still need a couple of washers between the lid and hinge to get a good fit.

At this point I have my lid on and it fits very good. Next I will be trying to do the wiring using the one touch controller wired with Jack Olsen's and Tyson Schmidt's wire diagram.

I will try to attach some pictures, the quality is not very good, maybe you can see what it looks like.

If something above is not clear let me know and I'll see if I can clear it up.

Any more pics with it installed & ready to go? Your car looks the same colour as mine. I would be interested to see the final result!

Here is a few more photo's. Lid is on and complete although I still need to wire it.

Also, under the spoiler there is a plastic part that folds down called the "rear wall", the parts diagram show another part below it calling it a "sealing", my didn't have this part (the "sealing"), is anyone familiar with this and what does it do. Dealer wants $131 for it.

Ok, I don't know if it sounds dumb to you guys... I'm keen to put a 964 decklid on my '67S for aerodynamic reasons. But I don't really like 2 things about it. Black grille and the way there's a little whoosh at the very edge of the movable piece.

Sure I can paint the grille silver or something, but how about the edge? Can I have it sanded down to be flat? Will it lose its purpose then?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Sprint.

Bump...looking for anyone who has successfully installed 964 deck on earlier 911; would really like to do this at some point to my 87 Carrera.

Also, has anyone been successful in auto deploying of the wing.

Anyone else?

Compliments.

I've often thought of doing the same but then held back. I despise the heavy look of Carrera wings which further ruins the clean line on a coupe. But now that I see how yours looks and serves a practical purpose, its growing on me... again.

As a bonus, these 964 spoilers seem to be a bargain buy. Maybe not anymore!
