where and what are thermal reactors

What are these for and what do they look like ? Are they just for emission control, my 1976 911s is not a california model so do I even have these? As always, thanks for any info----Bill

Bill:

Thermal reactors are number 11 they are bolted to the exhaust manifolds on one side and heat exchangers on the other. Most true thermal reactors have been replaced by a cast iron pipe.

They were installed to meet the CA emmissions reqm'ts in '77, I believe. The problem wiht the T/R was that they generated alot of heat which added to the stud pulling problem of the 2.7s.

Best thing to do, emmission testing allowing, is to install the pre '74 heat exhangers, or SSIs which run cooler, and add about 15 hp to the 2.7.

This doesn't look familiar so I don't think my car has one. Also if I understand you correctly they weren't installed on 76 models and then just to meet Cal emmision requirements, is this right?

I do not believe that they were installed in '76. Then in '77 for CA, and then in '78 came the SCs.

Thermal Reactors were installed on '75-'77 California models only.
