Is this varioram

I'll admit to not being up on 993's. But a friend in Florida has asked my thoughts on a car for sale in Oregon. Anybody know when the 993 got the varioram intake? Thanks

I'm pretty sure Varioram was introduced in the 1996 model year.

Don

PS - The link is not working...

It's being driven less than 5K miles a year, so that's a plus (enough to keep things working but not too much to beat it), but the Tip is a minus for most folks. They are very nice cars (ask BigBPainta), price seems in the general ballpark. It's due for a 30K service, would be good to have that done first. I'll dig around for the latest Anderson Market Update and see what I find...

Yup, varioram in '96:

http://autozine.kyul.net/911/911_81.htm

They say '95, but it didn't appear until the '96 model year.

In SoCal, mid mileage 993's (50K) are in the $30's depending on year and condition. A '96 w/28K should fetch somewhere around $40K plus or minus. The Tip probably drops the price somewhat, as an enthusiast will generally want the 6-speed.

Bruce says $38 to $51, so with the Tip and the low miles cancelling each other out, seems like low 40's is about right. This is just my SWAG though, I'm sure there are others with a more qualified opinion.

In my friend's case, the tip might be an advantage...he's had shoulder replacement surgery...Anything you'd care top add to the string guys, go ahead on it...I'm going to send him a link. Your opinions count more than mine when it comes to 993 models. I have no personal experience with them.

If he wants the tip it is to his advantage, but he may want to indicate disdain with it to try and lower the price. Car dealers will spin it however they can to jack the price ("oh, the tip is sooo desirable and hard to find" or "this has a 6-speed...very hard to get").

Looks like a well appointed car. The 30K mile service, if not already performed, will be expensive (probably over $1K). He should factor that into the price and use it during negotiations. And don't let them do the work unless they are a good shop.

The only gotchas I remember reading about with the '96 cars are the steering racks leaking. But a good PPI should turn up any problems.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Roger has been out of P cars for quite some time...but I think he's getting ready to come back home.
