DOT EPA exempt documents
I inquired at the DMV about registering my Euro spec 1976 Porsche and they are asking for DOT and EPA stickers.
We all know DMV individuals are not the most knowledgeable individuals. How do I get these stickers? Is there a official document number or code number that I can quote to the DMV, stating I don't need stickers and that this car is exempt? |

Politely agree to disagree with that DMV person and go to another DMV. You do not need any EPA/DOT documents as the car is over 25 years old and automatically exempt as of this date. Tell them to go to the government website as the car is now 37 years old and its way past its freshness date.
There are no shenanigans going on here, however if the car was converted to comply with these rules lets say, five years after the car was made and it was imported they are probably looking for these but at this point that question is now moot if it already has a US title. Most, if not all the companies that did the grey market work are no longer around as there isn't much money in it these days. These papers are probably gone to the wind, the EPA and DOT don't care, and neither does US Customs. This person is just trying to be difficult. Go to a different DMV, see someone else and try to explain that this 37-year-old car doesn't need them, however you will still need to get the car smogged since it is a '76 unless your state goes by the 25-year-old exempt rule. It does already have a US title correct? Even if it doesn't, it doesn't need the papers. You're not trying to register a McLaren F1 here. And oh, by the way, there are no EPA or DOT compliance stickers. Only one put on the door jamb by the company doing the work that the car 'complies' by the rules of the United States EPA and DOT. These are not given out by the government agencies. Also, do not confuse 'compliance' with 'exempt.' Your car does not need to 'comply' because it already is 'exempt'!! Thanks for the help. This is a fresh import from the old country. All documents are in French, so I think I will need the Title translated and notorized. I just found the government website on the EPA and DOT exemption, so I can refer to that.

I am not sure what you mean - Even if it doesn't, it doesn't need the papers. You're not trying to register a McLaren F1 here. Thanks for the reassurance |
