Cal Classix Preaching The Gospel!

Say what you will about California Classix, but this latest ad is just great. Couldn't have said it better myself. -- Curt

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1844054488

"Back in the late 1960s, Americans walked on the Moon, hippies enjoyed the Summer of Love as much as the legendary Woodstock concert, and the Porsche factory approached the zenith of its racing success.
Sports cars were made to be driven fast, and designed accordingly. The concept of having hundreds of tranquillized horses inside a gadget-laden, obese boulevard cruiser, festooned with spoilers, wings, and more computers than a lunar landing shuttle, seemed absurd. To the purist, it still is!

A Sixties sports car is a lean driving machine, and a Porsche 911 from that period remains living proof that less can be so much more. No electronics, black boxes, or catalytic converters; no power windows, power seats, power door locks, air conditioning, cruise control, global positioning devices, or cupholders spoil the undiluted, unadulterated fun.
Generation Xers will never be able to understand the essential joy of driving, without simultaneously being numbed by sub-woofers, munching on "fast" food (yeah, right!), and making cell phone calls. Advertising types tell us--with a straight face--that the "New Mini" or the BMW Z3 are the epitome of sporting bliss. Yet, these cars weigh over 1,200lbs more than our '68 Porsche here, a ton more than even a stock '65 Mustang fastback!"

is it just me, or does the engine lid look a lot shinier than the rear fender?

Guesses on what it will go for? What's the 2.7 thing all about? Wasn't green shrouds for Es?

My guess: actual value $8,500 - that's about $12,500 in "eBay-dollars" -- Curt

Good writing, but he still needs an editor; a new Mini weighs "a ton more than '65 Mustang Fastback"??

As I mentioned in another thread, I think they'll get up to $15,000 for it myself - I've learned not to underestimate Bill's prose on eBay.

As for the writing, not only could they use a fact-checker, but to me the ads still reek of hucksterism. Every Porsche they sell, regardless of vintage, is the "bestest Porsche in the whole wide world." The car's got a 2.7 and replaces "the rather pedestrian" 2.0, but if it still had the original engine, they'd be raving over how great the it was, and what great character the 2.0s had. One paragraph they gloat about the engine upgrade, the next they tout the original interior.

Fact is, if the car was a '69 912 targa updated to look like a 1990 C4 complete with power seats, had a Radio Shack stereo and was painted hot pink, it'd be the greatest Porsche they'd ever seen. Until the next one they need to shift off the lot.

Thanks Emanuel - best laugh I've had all day. You are so completely right. They have refined the prose, but their motives are far from artful.

Well of course! Here's how they changed their tune for an SC on the lot!:

"The PORSCHE 911SC of 1978-82 vintage is very special. It corrected all the shortcomings of its much-lamented predecessor and is generally regarded as one of the finest 911s ever built in the models long history. Its build quality is legendary, many examples lasting in excess of 250,000 miles without major repairs. Among its main improvements were the new 3.0 liter aluminum engine block, the use of a catalytic converter instead of the dreaded thermal reactors and the fitting of an auxiliary oil cooler under the right front fender on all models. Also introduced was a maintenance-free, breaker-less ignition system.

Ice cold air conditioning
Electric sunroof
Power windows
Power mirrors
BLAUPUNKT AM/FM cassette with equalizer
HIRSCHMANN power antenna
Full leather interior, including dash and door caps
European tail lights and fog lights

Being the last and most-developed 911 without huge flares and spoilers, thus best displaying 'Butzi' Porsche's classically pure design, the 911SC model will rise to the zenith of collectible PORSCHE automobiles within a few short years."

Hmmm... what happened to "No electronics, black boxes, or catalytic converters; no power windows, power seats, power door locks, air conditioning, cruise control, global positioning devices, or cupholders spoil the undiluted, unadulterated fun." -- Curt

Come on guys,

They're used-car salesmen !
You can't blame them for putting their product in the best light and talking about the merits of the flavor of the day. As long as they don't actually lie it's hard to really throw stones at them.
And I happen to own an old Porsche, so in this case I enjoy their write up.
Not saying I would deal with them, though.

Imagine the weeping

As I scour the country for a nice honest used 911, I find it so common there are so many of them " parked in garages " because their owners can't bear to part with them.

The tears flow as the owner shuts the door and lovingly pats the car on the roof and walks out of that airtight, humidity free garage to forget about the vehicle for years.

I just hope that one time in my life I actually find a person who has purchased such a vehicle out of a garage and they can dispel the skepticism I ever had about these stories.

Then again I used to believe Bill Clinton too.

That description of the SC sounds awfully familiar......where did I read that?
now I have to rush home and dig out my Bruce Anderson book and check :-)

(and where did they get a 911 SC with ice cold air conditioning?)

"Being the last and most-developed 911 without huge flares and spoilers, thus best displaying 'Butzi' Porsche's classically pure design, the 911SC model"

What about the carreras? They didn't have huge flares, and spoilers were an option, right?

As long as they don't actually lie? These guys would make great politicians, for they are masters of the art of the half truth. To my way of thinking, that's close enough to being a liar...damned right I'll throw stones!

I'm betting without even looking that it's from their "Hall of Fame" listings of previously sold cars - the Valkury ad they wrote for a black coupe, right?

I agree that they're used car salesmen - that's the point. No matter how much they may sound like fellow Porsche enthusiasts, you should never forget what their goal is: to sell you a used car. Some folks in this thread sounded like they might have forgotten that...

Yeah, no doubt. I saw an ad for something the other day that read:
"Brand new. Made from the finest quality materials on the market. It has a unique texture and smell that everyone on the block will notice: and of course want one too. But since this is a one of a kind run of a limited 10,000, they will be gone in no time.
It's right off the shelf and still piping hot, just like grandma used to bake. Colored with extreme care by the finest craftsmen, the sheen off this brown goodie will amaze and delight all who've ever had the pleasure to experience it. Women will swoon and men will envy. Your popularity will surely have you high rolling with every social group. It will be your forte to quasi-deityship.
Order yours now because in the next 3 minutes they will be bought up by your neighbor."

Sold at $11,100. As most expected, the ad copy was probably good for $2,000-$3,000 of that amount. -- Curt

From the quote in cegerer's post:

"The PORSCHE 911SC of 1978-82 vintage is very special. "

I just want to know what happened to the 83 vintage of the SC?
This quote must have come from The 911 Story (Paul Frere), 1982 edition maybe?
