Can anyone tell me what year my transaxle is
 

I have a 78 sc with 4 bolt axles which are supposed to be a 1974 part. I'm confused so i took a photo of the case stamping. Can anyone tell me what I have?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1362883577.jpg

According to Peter Morgan's book "Original Porsche 911" the 915/60 is a 1977 model year, ROW tranny.

Well, my 1977 Euro 2.7 had the six bolt CVs. Porsche stopped using the 4 bolt ones after the '74 or 5 model years. So I'd be confused too.

The early 4 bolters used the coarse spline output flanges. At some point Porsche switched to finer splines. Don't recall just when that change was made, but guys who were installing limited slip differentials had to be careful they had the right splines for the diffs they were buying. I think the '77s were still coarse splines, and if so it would have been easy enough to make this change.

But someone replaced your SC's transmission with what you have. All SCs had aluminum cases for their transmissions. All 2.7s had magnesium cases. Not much difference in gearing, and the mag case is plenty strong. But perhaps, with Porsche, "all" doesn't really mean that - this was the 24037th transmission for the '77 MY, and maybe when it was time for the '78 3.0s (which would have been around July of '77), maybe they wanted to use up the 2.7 transmissions they still had on hand.

That still does not explain the 4 bolt output flanges.

Mine has the electronic speedo so it does seem like it is a post 77 M/Y but this car has had quite a shady history of which I know very little of. I would like to know if there is a way to track down the original selling dealer by the VIN # Can anyone direct me to a site or help me? There is a free T-shirt with your car or any of your choice on it if you can help me locate that dealer.

What's up with that welded bead on the case? Someone add a drain plug or permanently seal a drain plug??? Ive never seen welding done on a trans case like that :eek:
Might point to a former repair done.

LOL! What you are looking at is actually a ring of routed out corrosion. It does look like a bead huh? I am going to back fill that with new material but I had to get out all the old black powdered **** in order to get a clean weld.
